Misc costs to expect with in-state California lease takeover? (DMV/Registration)

,

I think I’ve done quite a bit of research, but I can’t quite find the answer (forgive me if this CA-specific answer has been covered elsewhere).

I’m in talks regarding a private lease transfer, and aside from the roughly $500 in fees charged by BMWFS to facilitate the transfer (and future disposition/excess wear & tear/mileage/etc), are there other 3rd party fees I should anticipate now as part of the lease assumption process?

In particular, assuming the California DMV/Registration fees have recently been paid for on the vehicle, will these say 10-11 months of remaining CA registration be carried over with the car, or will I be responsible for paying the DMV yet again for the current year when the registration is transferred to me?

Thank you all for your help as these forums are super informative!

Hey @EvanD, sorry for bumping this thread but I have the exact same question. Did you ever discover any associated DMV fees? I’m thinking of taking over a Toyota Corolla lease and besides the lease takeover fee and the disposition fee, I’m wondering whether I’m responsible for any DMV fees (like registration or title change etc.) Thanks, and hope your takeover went well!

I’m going to leave this open since there were no answers at that time. Maybe now someone can chime in.

Hey @hackr2 — sorry for my delayed response.

I don’t recall 100%, but looking at my records, I see a California DMV receipt for $37 bucks, though I don’t have a breakdown. I do recall I had to pay for new license plates, but that may have been unique to my situation as I took over the lease when the car was less than a month old, so the plates probably arrived to the original owner and I didn’t bother bugging them as they were ~300 miles away.

If there were any costs beyond the $37, they were negligible. We did get hit with the ~$500 fee by BMWFS for the transfer, but we knew that going into the takeover. The only real surprise was the 3 years of included service with a BMW didn’t get carried over to the new owner in a lease transfer, though with a Toyota, this probably isn’t relavent.

Hope this helps!

Thanks @EvanD!! I recently completed my TFS lease takeover for a 2020 Corolla. For posterity, I paid about $38 total to the DMV. The TFS lease transfer costs ($200) were separate.
