Was this 5 series new when you bought it? Was all of the factory recommended service done to it? How long did you keep it? Just trying to get some context.
It was a cpo, bought a 08 in 2011 kept until 2018. Bought for 33k sold it for 5k lol
Yeah, the depreciation is fierce in that time frame. Probably sold just about the time a lot of high $$$ routine maintenance was about to be due.
I donāt know how much data they have, but Consumer Reports rates the 2024 GLE as having very poor reliability.
I donāt know how well Consumer Reports gauges reliability. Kind of like JD Power, if the owner has a hard time programing the radio presets itās listed as a defect. Therefore, hurting the vehicles reliability rating. Now mind you, Iām not professing a MB to be as reliable as Lexus in its heyday. Also, not saying that a 10-year-old MB with a ton of deferred maintenace is going to be a good car either. But maybe a 3-year-old MB with a good service history and low to average miles will probably have several more years of reliability left in it. Assuming all maintenace and wear and tear items are handled along the way.
Our family has been serial-y owning/leasing MBs since the 1980s. I recall when a MB executive made that comment (late 1990s or early 2000s?) when their ratings slipped in JD Power surveys.
Trust me, it wasnāt just about the radio.
Having said that, yes, I agree that there is a good chance that a well-maintained car could have a few good yrs of service. Itās just that weāve also had a few well-maintained ones (none of our cars have deferred maintenance) go south on us pretty quickly. You only need a few bad ones to make you wary of the brand overall (not to mention the cost of maintaining a German luxury car of any brand).
Yeah, I understand. It can happen. Seems like itās a snowball effect. If I was looking at used cars and my 2 options were a 10-year-old Lexus GX with a 100k miles and a 10-year-old MB GLE350 w/ 100k miles. Iād go with the Lexus hands down. Even if nothing goes āwrongā with the car and youāre only paying for routine maintenance and wear and tear the Mercedes is going to bankrupt you. Iāve put about $7500 in repairs/Maintenace in my '05 BMW M3. I donāt know whatās left to replace on it anymore lol
Finance a 2 year old cpo then sell it when the warranty is up. Let someone else take the depreciation hit
That will probably be my plan in a couple of years, when interest rates on used cars drop below 5%. Not to go off topic here, but I am not a big fan of the new 5 series. I prefer the front grill of the 3 series (with the M sport package).
Anyway, back to the topic at hand.
I ended up leasing a bmw ix, just a much better deal on it with 10k bmw credit plus dealer took another 10k off and there MF was .00025 compared to MB which is .0028, I think. Great time to lease an EV
Congrats. Care to share your final numbers?
it was a 92k MSRP bmw ix, and we ended up leasing for 871 for a a month sign and drive, 36/10 lease. all around much better price then the GLE, and we save on gas as well, win/win
