This may not be possible, and I’d kinda understand why, but figured I would ask for suggestions.
Last couple of weeks I sent a few emails out to sales managers from dealers near me, targeting very specific VINs with very clear offers (msrp, sales price before incentives, incentives/rebates I qualify for, etc). Had a decent back and forth but did not land anything that was great. No problem, it happens so i go back to finding other targets.
My offers were aggressive but not insane - based on what I see in the marketplace as the range in my general geographic area.
Today as I was doing more research I come across an older broker post (but still in this month so same programs apply) and I am 95% sure one of the cars offered by the broker may be one of the cars i targeted and discussed with one of the GSM.
I noticed that the sale price/discount the broker was posting was deeper than what I had received as a counter from the GSM. And it was in line or maybe a little less than what I had shot out on my first email.
Now I can think of reasons why the broker gets a better deal (relationship, volume, etc) from the dealer. Though it makes it harder for those of us just trying to do 1 deal every other year or whatever. But I digress - thats not the point of the post.
With that, I am looking for advise or suggestions on how I can potentially breach the subject with the dealer (if at all). How could I go about trying to get close or match the discount? Right now we are off by about $2500 or about 3-4% of the MSRP. Lets assume I feel comfortable it is 100% the same car (just bear with me) or I’m willing to make that leap. I wouldnt want to mention anything about a broker - or should I?
Any suggestions on how to further push the manager gently to try to get closer? I normally would let it go and move on but knowing he can go deeper elsewhere makes me thing there is an opening here.
I would make a firm response to any manager with: I’m willing to do this deal immediately with these terms. Please reach back out if you can complete the deal with those numbers. They are trying to maximize profit and don’t know how much you’ll actually pay yet.
How is it snaking if I do the leg work and I’m trying to work my own deal?
No offense to any brokers - I have sent their info to many friends who dont want to do the work. But I dig trying to work it on my own. I am sure others here can relate.
Yeah this was always my plan to go back to all those that engaged and hit them up on Monday to see if anyone is feeling like trying to move one more unit for the month.
The intention is not to screw over a broker. I didnt start looking for their cars. I did my own leg work, found 3-4 cars near me that were attractive and reached out for deals.
Like everyone else (I assume), I use marketplace posts to gauge what may be possible.
I dont think im not getting anywhere - the first back and forth got a decent (but not great) deal. I am looking to improve it. It just happens, in this specific case, that it appears he may be willing to go deeper. Why wouldnt I try?
What I meant is that for other vehicles I tried to negotiate, I am ignorant as to how deep a GSM might go. So I can only push so much. Its also a waste of time. In this particular case I think I know
Honestly sounds more like a coincidence to me, but regardless, there are plenty of reasons why they won’t do a deal for a retail customer that they will do for a broker, a large part of that being the broker takes away a large part of the work for the dealer. Some stores just also would rather try to hold gross with their local customers, do I think it makes sense always, no… but that is just how some of them are… they are in business to make money, after all.
Yeah I am not in a rush. Thats what I have done in the past. I will fire a note on Monday again to let them know I cam ready to sign if they want to move a unit and then be done.
