Okay, so I figure it’s worth asking if the MA EV credit is hackable… I live in NH, but we have a rental property in MA. Rivian doesn’t lease in NH yet, so I was thinking about leasing it using that address, since we get mail there. I didn’t end up doing it, but if I had, would I have been able to claim the MA tax credit, since it would be registered to that address? The only reason I didn’t do it was the MA sales tax, but I feel like this would have offset it.
It’s a pain. I talked to the DMV about it. You CAN do it, but they won’t transfer your registration, so you have to re-register it. I live in NH, and it would have cost me another $1,400 or so in registration fees to re-register it in NH. Bets case scenario, you ride out that first year, then renew in your home state.

You need to have a MA license as well. You are also forgetting about yearly excise tax. On a $75k truck it would be almost $1700+ the first year. It goes down after that. So between sales tax and excise tax I don’t think you’d actually save much vs buying in NH. This is assuming NH doesn’t pay sales tax and don’t have yearly excise tax like MA does.
Oh, it’s not about saving money. Rivian isn’t leasing in NH yet, so I would have HAD to go to MA to lease one. I was thinking the tax credit would just offset the excise tax, and maybe help a little on the deal, but at the end of the day, I wouldn’t be able to get the MA rebate anyway.
You are not allowed to pick it up in MA using a NH DL, address and reg?
No, when I called Rivian, they said it HAD to be registered in MA, since they’re not licensed to lease in NH. She also told me that if I registered in MA, then reregistered in NH, there was nothing they could do about that, so there IS a workaround, but it’s an expensive one

July 9 I emailed them to apply for the rebate.
July 16 they emailed me back asking for more info as I was missing some things
