I’m looking to buy a SUV for my elderly dad who is still with it. Any suggestions on a purchase for less than 35K? Looking for gas or hybrid know all electric I’m in California thank you
Venn diagram of value retention, reliability, inexpensive warranty extension and build quality you’re looking at Toyota, Honda, Subaru and Hyundai/Kia.
At that price point you’re looking at a Kia Niro hybrid well equipped or CRV hybrid base model etc etc.
So depends on your dad’s preference for size vs features. Helped an older family member in a similar situation a few years ago and they preferred smaller the better as long as they could carry two normal sized adults in the back seat. Seltos was their choice.
Subaru Crosstrek Limited. No other option
My dad sold his 2016 RX350 for a NX. He finds it more comfortable to use on a daily basis.
No love for the Forester?
I’m sure it was a joke. Because calling a car irreplaceable in the most generic, interchangeable segment would be ludicrous.
Lot of options these days. I would just go with gas as electric could be overhead for elderly. Corolla cross, cx5 etc. I probably would look for good ground clearance for them to get-in/out and have a good view. Say Subaru crosstrek is ~9 inches vs 8 for other suv’s.
Ouch. It’s kind of sad, though, b/c I think this is such a vital type of car for many people…
Toyota rav4
Why is it sad? Choice is a great thing. As well as the fact that so many OEMs provide an option that isn’t a future lemon or the punitive penalty boxes of yesteryear.
I never called it irreplaceable. I called it the best new suv option for under 35k. They have more tech inside than many vehicles priced 2x. Reliable, good on gas, not offensive on the eyes. Way better than a kia niro, rav 4, or other econobox
Eh, generic and interchangeable is kind of sad. W/ all the choices, it’d be nice if there were a few more funky/interesting options, I guess.
Ok that’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it. But “no other option” is inferred as irreplaceable.
“Best new SUV” is very debatable and subjective here. Not really invested enough to debate the pros and cons of each car, but I stand by my previous comment that the cars of these 5 companies are very interchangeable and it comes down to personal preference.

W/ all the choices, it’d be nice if there were a few more funky/interesting options, I guess.
There are funky choices out there but if the OP’s dad liked something uniquely enough he wouldn’t be asking the question. Anyway it’s a good thing there are multiple choices where you can’t really go wrong.
If SUV isn’t a hard requirement, hard to argue against Camry hybrid’s ~50MPG
Used Highlander

Subaru Crosstrek Limited.
My dad is a price shopper - just want to get him something nice for a older gentlement. @Jeff_BeachCitiesAuto - any suggestions on a purchase?
Subaru Outback Touring, may be used one, 2023 or later.
