Stumbled across this video that was posted on YouTube about a month ago. This car is an example of Lexus at its glory, before they starting shifting into debatable designs.
Funny thing is this actual car was listed for sale and sold for less than 10 grand, which is a bargain for what you’re getting with this car, even compared to today’s luxury sedans.
Funny you bring it up. I had this conversation today with someone.
While I was doing some car searching to replace my lease recently, I finally decided to go and take a look at Infiniti, Lexus, and Acura. I think these manufacturers are living off past glory because I was not impressed at all. I really don’t think they’re in the same league as BMW, MB, Audi, etc. There was no way I could see justification to their pricing based on what I saw.
I have an RX350 right now which will mature next April but I kinda want to get in on the year end events. I am currently looking at a GS to possibly replace it. What I really want to try is an Audi A5 Sportsback but Audis and BMW seems to have terrible residuals which makes leasing them not very smart for me.
Love my wifes Lexus RX, takes a beating and keeps on going. 156k miles on it now, still runs great and I never have any concerns about the car when my wife and kids are out and about on longer trips. It has been dead reliable and that is what is most important to me along with safety. We will drive this car into the ground, because outside of looking a little dated inside and out, the interior materials have held up quite well and when cleaned up does not show it’s age at all.
Meanwhile my previous BMW was like a slot machine every morning. Always had fear of when the dash would light up like a Christmas tree and put a nice dent in the pocket.
Agreed, if I wanted to buy a car because of longevity without issues, I’d pick Toyota any day. Since I lease, I never have to worry about that and it isn’t a factor in my decision making.
My point is that these cars, their marketing, and their price tags suggest that they are luxury vehicles, with great design, comfort, features, etc. I just don’t think that sitting inside a Lexus or an Acura makes me feel like I’ve stepped into a luxury car.
I tested a TLX a few weeks ago and nothing about that car was luxurious, even entry-level luxurious. I’d take a 3 or a 300 over it any day of the week. It really just seemed like a nice Honda.
I guess I’m ranting because I can’t comprehend how people spend that kind of money for those cars.
The only Lexus sedan that somewhat appeals to me is the LS, everything under this model is something I would not consider. The LS starts at 70-something grand, which is a big jump from the 45-60 grand where it gets interesting with other makes.
Does this cluster belong in a GS, a car that starts at 39K? I’ll take an S60 that starts at $36K with that beautiful, sexy, touchscreen that replaces those nasty plastic buttons that Lexus is using.
