Maybe a dumb question - but if I lease a car in Texas, registered to an address I have in Texas, but then move the car to NYC where I live and will use the car, what are the tax implications? How long does it need to stay registered in Texas? Will I have to pay sales tax in NY for the car when I move it? Can’t find anything on a Google search.
you pay full sales price on the tx lease, assuming no tax credits, and then sales tax on the lease payments up front.
You’ll pay a hefty double tax as stated above so why not register the lease to your NY address at inception?
Apparently, some LR dealers won’t sell outside their state. seems to be a nationwide rule that only a few dealers choose to follow (major metro dealers). Therefore, if the car you want is at a dealer and they won’t sell outside that state, you ask questions like the above, lol. Trust me, I would much rather register in NY.
They are only allowed a certain % of sales to be out of region. Beyond that, they get hit with a chargeback. If you are registering in NY, find a dealer that is able to sell to NY.
NY has the pay payments tax upfront rule as well so OP better be aware of that
I know im late but all you have to do is register the car in texas then when the register renewal comes up just do it online with the texas address.
What u have to make sure of is your insurance make sure they cover you in different states
I wouldn’t tell them I live in NY. Just say your visiting in NY if they ask if u had to file a claim
