LeaseTrader - Advice needed for dispute

Hi everyone! I spoken to Lease Trader in Feb/March and after a bunch of (false) promises, signed up to list my car on their platform.

I spoke to 3-4 people through their platform (amongst 30-40 spam messages) and exchanged numbers for video tours as well. They weren’t in a 50 mile radius so it made sense, and of course COVID-19.

I ended up transferring the vehicle to someone without any help from them whatsoever and they’re threatening to take my account to collections because I didn’t inform them and close it out. All because I had someone’s number within my inbox.

I do want to clarify that I’d posted the same thing on Facebook marketplace (learned of LH after I got rid of it) and got hits from several people. One of them being the fiancé of the person who eventually took it. Making my case harder because if they look, it will show up as the same person and I’ll appear to be in the wrong.

In a moment of panic, I paid it off but am wondering:

  1. Is it legal for them to threaten collections?
  2. Do I need to bite this one and move on or do I have any recourse here?

Note: For anyone reading this in the future, I’m happy to provide my opinion on other aspects of their platform via a separate message.

You can always chargeback on the credit card and provide your proof. That would be the best start.

I thought of that and wondered if they still are able to push it to collections.

Not sure if I need to take this to /r/personalfinance or if someone can help here! LH has been fantastic for me so posted here first

  1. Yes. You signed up for a service and didn’t cancel, regardless of use by you. If you don’t pay, they can and will go after you, including collections.

  2. Suck it up as a learning experience. I don’t see any recourse outside of them refunding you for customer satisfaction. Don’t hold your breath.

You paid the fee already so why would they send to collections?

I mean, if I do a chargeback/dispute with my credit card, will they still be able to take it to collections? Or does it get dropped if I win the dispute?

Also was trying to understand Lease Traders overall standing but @mp11477’s response seems to make me feel I’m going to have to bite this one.

What does your agreement with LeaseTrader say?

A successful credit card dispute doesn’t dissolve a contractual obligation.
