Leased out of state and registering in NJ

Hello,

Leased a vehicle from out of state but dealer not able to complete paperwork for permanent plates.

Did anyone personally went to a DMV in NJ to get their plates for a leased vehicle with out of state dealer. I understand that it is easy if you bought the car, but not sure about if you leased the car.

Any insights appreciated. TIA.

I have done and it’s pretty easy as long as you have everything. Just have your dealer send you the MSO and all the supporting docs (UTA, reg app, odometer statement). Just an FYI, you also have to contact your leasing company and obtain a POA that will allow you to register the car on their behalf since they are the owner on the title.

Thank you.

Can the dealer issue POA on behalf of manufacturer or should I contact the manufacturer, which happened to be the leasing company as well in this case.

Did they give you a specific reason why they cannot complete the paperwork?

The agency that they are working with is taking too long and too slow to respond. So, they are asking me to get it done personally.

I’m in NJ and just leased a Jeep out of MD. It took about 6 weeks to get the registration, but the dealer handled everything. They had to send a second temp tag after the first expired.

You should be compensated for it then imo. Can’t hurt to ask them for something, you’re wasting your time/money doing something they were supposed to.

My dealer uses regusa to make it much easier then having to deal with every dmv in the country. Well worth the money they charge.

Thank you.

Is there any limit as to how many / how much time we can continue to use temp tags with renewal?

That depends on the rules of the state that issued the temp tag.

It’s all over the place. NJ issues one 30 day temp, MD issues 60-day and you can issue multiple, WI does 30 day and only once, etc, etc.

What state did you buy from?

I’ve done it few times. Did you already pay the tax on the lease? Because DMV will require you to prove it was paid so they can claim it from the state.

Thank you.
