Lease transfer process in NJ

,

Hello Everyone!
I just transferred my lease to a friend of mine. I got a message from GM saying that the lease has successfully been transferred to my friend. But GM says he may not be able to drive until he registers it in NJ DMV. And to do that GM will have to send paperwork to DMV and then the DMV will send paperwork back to the GM before my friend can register. Is this true? Currently, the car is in its name as lease has been transferred. Can I drive the car as it’s still registered and insured under me. What happens if I get into an accident? The car is not under my name anymore. Can my friend insurance under his insurance he is the lease owner? But the car is not registered under him yet. I am so confused. Please help.

Thank you

It isn’t that big a deal. He should absolutely get it insured. He can then drive with your plates and reg (if you are comfortable with that since, if he does something stupid, the plate will lead back to you). Insurance only cares about ownership, not registration. If he got pulled over, they’d give a bit of a hard time about the names not matching, but as long as it is insured and registered and he has your permission, there is no law saying he can’t drive it.

Did you go to the local NJ DMV near you and ask them?
