Lease pre-incentive discount rate as benchmark for purchase/buy price?

Dear Hackers,

New to the leasing world, thank you all for the great info. that this forum provides!

I’m in the market for a 3row SUV/minivan, and debating whether to buy vs. lease.

My question is that can the lease pre-incentive discount prices that are shared by members be used as a benchmark price for a purchase price for the same car?

For example, if I see a lease pre-incentive discount rate of 13% off MSRP for a car in my region, can I expect to maybe to get a purchase price in the same ballpark (+/- some negotiation luck)?

My naive intuition tells me that the dealer pre-incentive discount rate shouldn’t matter whether you buy vs. lease, but is there something that makes the lease pre-incentive discount rate lower for leases compared to when buying or vice versa?

Thank you all for you insight!
Chris

Yes.

However, lease incentives might differ from purchase incentives. So you just need to run the numbers to see what makes financial sense for you.

As long as your pre-incentive discount does not come with a corresponding MF mark up, then generally it should make no difference if you’re leasing or buying.

That’s great, makes the comparison of buying vs. leasing a bit easier, since at least there’s no major dealer discounts differences.

Also, makes this forum so much more valuable, since I haven’t found any comparable community (and active) for sharing non-lease buying prices for their vehicles. I’ve looked at TrueCar, but their data is probably not as accurate as the ones shared by members here.

Does or does not?

This is like the third thread that’s happened in since I got a new phone. I’m actually starting to wonder if my phone is autocorrecting phrases.
