Lease End on 13-Month Hyundai Ioniq 5 Issue - Lease Term Dates Changed?

I signed a 13-month lease in October 2024, taking advantage of an incredible deal for a one-pay Ioniq 5 through this forum in California. I flew down to the dealership, signed the paperwork/paid, and drove home. A few weeks later, the dealership sent me another set of lease agreement paperwork to sign with all of the same information, but the price was slightly higher. I called the dealership to ask why I needed to re-sign and about the slight discrepancy in pricing. The finance manager stated that Hyundai Financial kicked back the lease agreement as it was not on their updated agreement, and that they miscalculated the tax rate, which they would cover the cost. I got an e-mail from them confirming they will indeed do this and sent the paperwork back.

I didn’t think much of it until three months later, when my temporary license tags were about to expire and I hadn’t received my plates. I called the DMV, and they stated they had not received all of the required paperwork from Hyundai. I then called the dealership and left messages several times for the person in charge of registrations, who never returned my call. Eventually, my license plates arrived in January 2025, after my temporary tags had expired.

Fast forward to today, I wanted to turn in my lease early and was curious about the process, so I called Hyundai corporate. They transferred me to the lease-end department, which stated that my lease term was from 1/12/2025 - 2/12/2026, almost three months after I paid for and picked up the vehicle. I told them that this was incorrect and that I have the contract from my original lease agreement. They stated that the dealership needs to resubmit the correct paperwork, as all of their documents that were submitted show a 1/12/2025 start date.

I’ve contacted the finance person who initially contacted me regarding re-signing the lease back in November. I’ve leased several cars in the past and never had anything like this happen before. Corporate stated they are required to open an anonymous complaint regarding this, but I’m unsure what to do if the dealership doesn’t contact me back or get in touch with corporate. I was wanting to return the lease early and pay the disposition fee/over mileage, but the lease-end department stated I needed to get this sorted out first. I don’t want to be keeping this car until Feb/2026!

FREE car for 3 months…just keep it till Jan/Feb and pay then, whatever over miles you put on.

EDIT: Plus you have that EA free juice too :call_me_hand:

Are you complaining about 3 months of free car?

The problem is that I’ve already leased another vehicle, expecting to turn it in in two months. As it was a 13-month lease, I was planning on turning in the car before the registration fee was due.

If registration is due in Jan turn it in then, will cost you insurance payments on it but a FREE ride till Jan

EDIT: CA DMV allows for PNO status of registration, look into that as well, you can not drive it if PNO is obtained but you skip the $600 reg. till you turn it in

Not really a “free” car.

I’m going to have to pay the registration due again in October. I think it was over $700. And I’m going to have to maintain insurance.

Had I known there was this mistake on the lease and not leased another car already, it wouldn’t be as big of an issue.

From your initial post, I had the impression your tags would only expire on Jan-26, isn’t this the case?

Seems like it… I already received my renewal and I also signed in Oct 2024, so OP should’ve received his DMV renewal notices by now.

OP send us a photo of your back license plate stickers etc… will figure out for you

The tags expire in October, the month I originally picked up the vehicle.

Did you have a delay in receiving your plates? If you did, you may want to call Hyundai Financial to see if your lease dates were changed.

No, mine were sent within two weeks, and my online Account matches with my lease terms.
I think you can turn it in anytime, since it was a One Pay… ask them, but I think it’s doable
