Lease 2018 vs buy 2017

I’ve located a 2017 i3 with what appears to be a significant discount off MSRP. Not sure if it’s a demo, possibly. I’m seeing incentives for 10k off and another for 5K off. Plus I think I get a discount through my employer, though I’m not sure what it is. Do these stack? Would I actually get $15K off sales price (plus employer discount) and then l collect the $7500 federal at tax time?

These discounts (if they stack) would basically put the purchase price around 55 to 60% of MSRP. After federal, that’s around 45% of MSRP, plus my local utility gives me another $1K.

Am I crazy to consider buying an i3 in this situation? After it’s all said and done, I think I’d be paying in the lower 20K range, less than the price of a low mileage 2016 i3 on Carvana.

Or is it likely that a great deal will come along for a 2018 i3 lease in the next 3 to 4 months? (I’m in Florida, so this seems unlikely for me)

Someone else can probably confirm, but I believe lease support (incentives) for 2017’s ended on Monday.

Right - the BMW website doesn’t mention leasing for the 2017 i3 anymore…

But I guess my main question is should I think seriously about buying a 2017 with the crazy incentives that are out there, or should I just wait for a 2018 lease deal?

If the incentives stack (and that’s a BIG IF), then I could potentially buy an i3 for about 50% off of MSRP, after Federal and BMW incentives. One issue there is needing to wait until next year to take the Federal, so I’d be paying on a higher loan…

Worth it to wait for a great lease, or should I think seriously about outright buying one?

I know they won’t be worth much in a few years, what with newer, longer range units coming out, but as long as it has a REx, it should be good enough, as long as it’s reliable.

Have you looked at the used values of i3s? I would not buy one period. Most of those incentives can be used with a lease. Let bmw assume it will be worth 58% in three years, and you don’t have to worry about it.

I would at least confirm that crazy price you think you’re getting on a 2017 is actually a reality. You’re basing on a lot of assumption here. I’m in the camp “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is”.

Right - I’ve contacted them and I’m waiting to confirm.

The guy I spoke to also stated they were still leasing the 2017 i3. Perhaps he means through a third party, not via BMW (bmwusa’s site doesn’t mention any leasing incentives on the 2017).

2017 i3’s and i8’s still have lease support.

Sweet… I’m close to a deal… This i3 has about 1300 miles on it and they have agreed to 40k (about 17% off MSRP). It’s a pretty base model with REx. Only getting the $7500 credit, but even still, after drive offs I should be around $210 a month.

Not a California deal, but about $6K total cost on the lease… (24 months, 10K per year)

Nothing is final yet, though so I’ll see what the actual numbers look like.

Is there only a $7500 rebate at this time? I believe last month in CA, there was $7500 iPerformance rebate plus $2k lease cash that everyone qualified for.

Pretty sure BMW FS claims the federal rebate, that should be embedded in your sales #.

Here in Florida, they weren’t offering the $2K in lease cash from what I could tell. They do offer it in the NE though. I wanted to get a demo from there, which would have been a better deal than this one (higher trim line, lower payment). It was sold by the time I got serious though. Gotta strike while the iron is hot.

The purchase option did not end well. But, the lease looks like it will work, I think. Waiting on final numbers, but we had an agreement based on an additional discount I asked for. Should get final numbers tomorrow morning, so unless there is some unwelcome surprise that shows up, I think I’m getting an i3 on a 24 month 10K lease with the acquisition fee waiver.
