JD Power rankings are in for 2018, let the trash talk begin!

Thought i’d throw this out there for some spirited remarks. Here come the Koreans in the top 3, I can already hear the badge snobs…

Mercedes? BMW? Nope. Winners in J. D. Power quality survey will surprise you
Eric D. Lawrence, Detroit Free Press Published 8:02 a.m. ET June 20, 2018 | Updated 11:17 a.m. ET June 20, 2018

DETROIT — South Korea’s three major auto brands lead one of the auto industry’s most closely watched gauges of automotive quality, gaining even more momentum compared to last year.

Hyundai, Kia and the luxury brand, Genesis, hold the top three spots in the J.D. Power 2018 U.S. Initial Quality Study, it was revealed Wednesday.

All are units of South Korean conglomerate Hyundai.

Last year, Kia, Genesis and Germany’s Porsche held the top three spots.

The survey shows vehicle quality improving for the fourth consecutive year to its best level to date. But some cars had more problems than others.

For instance, cars with advanced driver assistance systems, such as cruise control, park assist and backup, blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning had more issues.

“There’s no question that most automakers are doing a great job of listening to consumers and are producing vehicle quality of the highest caliber,” said Dave Sargent, J.D. Power’s vice president of global automotive, in a statement. “That said, some vehicle owners are still finding problems.”

He said that consumers are still demanding reliable vehicles even as they become more complex and automated.

The worst three brands in the survey were Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo.

The results released Wednesday are based on responses to 233 questions from more than 75,700 purchasers and lessees of new 2018 vehicles after 90 days of ownership conducted from February to May of this year.

Brands such as Tesla, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Maserati, Smart, Ferrari, Bentley and Rolls Royce were not included in the results because of a limited number of customers or small sample size.

As for Detroit brands, Ford is the highest-ranked, coming in at fifth place overall. General Motors’ highest-ranked brand is Chevrolet, ranked right behind Ford in sixth place. Ford’s Lincoln luxury brand was seventh and Fiat Chrysler’s Ram truck brand was tied with Lexus in eighth place.

The most improved brand was Mazda.

The issues, in many cases, weren’t that vehicles were constructed poorly. Rather, in 62 percent of the cases, the issue was with flawed design.

JD Power awards are nothing but advertising copy fodder.

My garage is comprised of literally the best and worst makes on the list and nothing in between. AMA

Is this the “initial quality” awards? I wonder if anyone uses this as a deciding factor for their choice of car.

Yeah I feel like initial quality means nothing. Base models like the Kia Rio will always be at the top because they have no tech or features so nothing can go wrong. However it’s worth noting that Genesis vehicles are well optioned so Hyundai does impress in that regard

Ford and Chevy at 5 and 6 right behind Porsche so you know this list is a real accurate gauge of “quality”. Has anyone at JD Power ever even sat in a Kia Rio?

Chevy at # 6. :joy:

Is this a joke?

nissan frontier for small pickup? why didnt they just give it to honda ridgeline smh  corolla rear suspension and feel is literally like a plastic flintstones car. i’m confused. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I, apparently, have the 3rd and 4th worst cars in existence. Would never knew after having zero problems

But the Flintstones car has a much cooler interior than the Corolla!

Chevy as a brand is #3 in the country in regard to sales, behind Ford and Toyota. Apparently they’re doing something right.

Next time I’m in the market I’ll use this as a gauge;
Get rid of my #25 for a #19 and get rid of my #18 with a #16. I’m sure I’ll be much happier.

Yeah…incentivizing buyers with $$!

honestly, who cares, that’s why we lease, under warranty and if the quality sucks we’re out of the car in a few years and they gotta fix it on their dime anyway.

i’ve owned a charger and an audi a6. charger has 0 problems in 120k miles. audi had tranny misfire by 10k miles plus i couldnt drive that thing longer than 30 miles without getting ass numb, which was odd because i could feel every bump in the road.

And Toyota and ford don’t incentivize

How did Volvo end up toward the bottom of the list. I gave them perfect marks for initial quality on my S90 (and I think JD Power paid me a crisp $1 bill for my time). [Or maybe I just took the $1 and didn’t fill out the survey - it is hazy now]

I can’t believe VW is only 4 behind Acura. I have range anxiety with my VW because I want to be close enough so that my wife can pick me up in her Acura when it breaks down.

The other day the engine shut off at a stoplight, which is normal with their new gas saving feature. But then when I let off the brakes, it tried to start but failed, and then I hears this grinding noise like when you try to start a car that’s already running. Then like nothing for 3 seconds, before magically starting up again. I had the car for less than a month, and I’ve gone to the dealer twice for an EPC failure that caused my car go from 0 to 40 in 60 seconds with a top speed of 40mph. But I have a 6 year 72k bumper to bumper warranty.

The sample size is so small I don’t know if it’s statistically significant
