My neighbor had one in his garage parked next to his 1991 944. He was the stereotypical suspender and contrast collar wearing attorney with a cigar in his mouth, and putting green in his backyard. Didn’t give off hipster vibes at all.
Haha definitely doesn’t sound like it
Oh, I thought the XF (and most Jags) were supposed to really good drivers? Or was it a reliability issue?
From someone in marketing, here’s my take. Your eyes haven’t been deceiving you for the past decade plus. All of these trainwreck marketing campaigns we’ve been witnessing do not translate in sales. When the creative fails, they get to blame it on “hate” as long as they include enough DEI presence. They get endemic industry accolades, and a nice salary bump jumping ship to a different agency or client. The intent isn’t never to sell their client’s product, but to leverage their significant marketing investments to further their own cause(s) and fame.
That was the start of it all back in Q3 of 2018

I’m not sure any of us know better than JLR who have absolutely aced the new Range Rover and other LR products recently. Maybe we should give them the benefit of the doubt. They’re trying to make a splash with the rebranding. The fact that we’re here talking about it means it’s working so far. To those saying no one will buy an I-Type over a Rolls-Royce, you might think differently if you pull up to Casadonna and there are already three Spectres in the valet line. People may want something new and unique.
Prediction: Jaguar will never compete with a Rolls Royce, ever. If that’s truly what they are angling to do, it’s ta-ta Jaguar.
But I do agree with you that they aced the new Range Rover.
The LR dealers I know well all mostly think the Land Rover division is also fucked broadly.
Disclaimer: not as member of the 0.05%, so what I’m about to say is totally speculative.
The ultra-wealthy might want something bespoke, but I think many of them want something that is recognizably expensively bespoke. So, if there already 3 Spectres in the lot, I assume that the 4th ones going to have some unique color or interior trim.
But Cadillac says that the Celestiq is supposedly sold out, so…
I am surprised this commercial wasn’t made sooner. Every research agency is telling manufacturers to go after younger people (Gen Z and younger Millennials) because they are earning more at a much earlier age and boomers are dying, which is going to cause the largest wealth transfer in the US’s history. Jag is planting the seed today in the 15 to 30-year-olds, which they hope pays off in the next few years.
Plus, everyone wants to be a lifestyle brand now. It is no longer about a singular product, but an ecosystem. Porsche and Ferrari have been doing this for a while where “community” is the focus rather than the product.
Focusing on a tiny slice of the market is what led to Jaguar always being on the deathbed.
Yes. This is precisely why you sell watches now.
Those watches are so overpriced. That is coming from a Porsche fanboi. I cannot imagine the higher priced ones selling very well…except in the instance where the client is backed into a corner for purchases, potential allocation, etc. The aesthetic is fine but the price point pushes you into a pool of other (luxury) options.
I feel that LR has lost much of its market share, as the epitome of luxury SUV’s. There has never been the variety of luxury SUV’s we have today; everyone and their grandmother is making them.
What are the true competitors to a Range Rover?
That’s like asking what are the true competitors to a Rolls Royce. Depends on who you ask and which particular model is in question.
-
If this was your game plan, wouldn’t you at least stop and wait for Cadillac to faceplant doing the exact same thing with the Celestiq since you’re not beating them to market anyway? At least then you would know for sure to not go down this path.

The Jaguar Project 8 was/is still pretty cool, not Silk Cut XJ 220 cool but cool nonetheless.
Just curious as to which of the variety of luxury SUV’s out there have eaten into the market share of the LR flagship model. I can think of one, maybe two, true competitors.
And you’re twisting my words as I had referred to the LR brand as a whole, not as any particular model(s) which clearly you have a hardon for lol
Ok so then let’s expand that to LR brand as a whole. What other luxury cars have tapped into their market share? And which of the LR models were dominant in the luxury SUV market to begin with?
