The $215 Title/Reg Process Fee is setting off my sneaky junk fee radar…
I’m putting together a counter offer and I was wondering if I can negotiate this.
It later says 'DMV Fees (estimated) $498. Wouldn’t Title/Reg be included in that?
I asked for a breakdown of the DMV fees but he body swerved it. He has otherwise been transparent though.
The California vehicle license fee (VLF) is 0.65% of the sales price. Since it’s $32.5k sales price, the VLF should be around $215. IMO, I’m surprised you don’t see even more fees in that summary. Like where’s the doc fee and filing fee that themachine described above?
Yeah, just brace yourself that there are some fees that will sneak in later. The lease/bank acquisition fee, dealer fees, other doc/paperwork/government fees, sales tax, etc will all increase your payments.
But, the fees should be clearly itemized and explained before you sign any contracts.
I was born braced! God bless Leasehackr and CarEdge for all the education because I didn’t know what I was walking into when I got my first lease six years ago. And I’m now a dealer’s worst nightmare!
He’s already shuffled $1,000 of his dealer discount into the factory rebate section - the rebate offered is only $500. He’s tried to gloss over that, so I’m triple checking everything else before I go back to him.
[Blacked out box is just protection package options which have been declined]

I’m going to get roasted about wanting to lease a Jeep Compass…
This is as close as I can get with the numbers on that sheet:
[I know this is a horrible deal - I just want to make sure my calculations are right so my counteroffer is water tight. Thank you so much for looking!]
You need to stop worry about fees and worry about net discount. You’re just going to annoy them if you start picking apart fees.
If you’re out of state, it’s likely they’re using a third party titling company and that $215 could be their fee.
OR dealers pass on OR CAT tax to their customers which they’re allowed to do. Also, it’s a hard cost for them, so it’s not like it’s just some kind of added profit like an $1,000 doc fee would be.
Also, for what it’s worth, Jeep Compasses have maybe $400 between MSRP and invoice and another $1,100-1,300 in backend money, they’re probably losing money at 5 or 6% off, not that you’d care, but just fyi, lol.
Thank you for the advice. I’ll put my counteroffer in with just the net price/discounts numbers. I got sidetracked into lease negotiations rather than price because the rebates are $2,000 less on a lease - so I’m told. Thanks again.
• Put that $1,000 rebate back in the discount line item where it belongs, which is in line with the advertised discount on their website
• Three local dealers said they would keep the $2,000 Bonus Cash and stack it with the $500 Bonus Cash
• Add my $1,000 private offer email code to the rebate box
It’s not letting me see that bit now for some reason. I know the $500 national bonus cash was at the top and there were others underneath, which may be the conditionals.
The other dealers saying they’ll honor the $2k national bonus cash on a lease could well be a bait and switch…
To clarify: the $2k bonus cash is on select inventory and this dealer (and the others) are advertising this as select inventory.
They capitalized the first payment. The 1578.60 tax is the total tax levied on the base monthly payment which is 427.76. Based on the disclosures, it appears that you owe 1000 at lease signing which is used as a cap reduction.
Bottom line: 1000 due upfront followed by 35 monthly payments of 471.62 each.
Some of the populated fields are somewhat misleading which is why I prefer to use my own program that I’ve developed. You may want to learn how to do the calculations manually.
A ha! Thank you. Yeah I do all my calculations manually on a separate spreadsheet. I just wanted to fully understand how he got to his numbers. I’m extra vigilant because I got stiffed on some purposefully misleading line items six years ago, so this time I’m LARPing as a forensic accountant with OCD.
