Is it a SCAM - RAV4 Deal/ LOS ANGELES listed on LeaseHackr

Hi Folks,

I tried to reserve this RAV4 lease in Los Angeles. I got a text next day from from Wei from HonestyCar “Hello there, This is wei speaking on behalf of HonestyCar. I’m reaching out as a representative for LeaseHacker, following your inquiry about the rav4 plug in deal we showcased.”

When I asked for booking she gave me a link to Honesty Car to fill in a credit check applicaiton. I was bit skeptical of submitting my social security online so I decided to call her. She didn’t pick up the phone Also, she wanted to me to Zelle the money which seem weird. Today she text me she is in China and her phone doesn’t work.

Can someone please verify this deal? It seems very scammy to me and I want to make sure no one falls for it.

This is how a lot of the brokers process works. All brokers are vetted and verified especially those listing the pre negotiated deals.

We follow a similar process but provide a broker agreement outlining our refund policy and don’t require Zelle because we know it makes people uncomfortable — so we offer CC as well.

I don’t know anything about this broker group, but there is a review thread (w/ the last review from 10/24). Wei is mentioned in at least one of the earlier posts in that thread (so hopefully that’s a good sign).

Edited to add: even if reviews are re-assuring, don’t move forward w/ something unless you yourself feel reasonably comfortable.

They’ve been on here awhile. You could try asking for references on LH if that helps.
Ultimately your call as to what you are comfortable with.

Honestcar has been on this forum for a few years now, and I believe I did talk to Wei some time back regarding a BMW but the deals weren’t good enough. That being said, i would definitely talk in person before sending someone Zelle

I believe sometime back there were a few guys who would get a car thru a broker , and then do a charge back via card. I would never take CC or Venmo via card for any such transactions.

We have a broker agreement they sign with explicit writing saying they authorize the transaction and it’s done through Apple Pay. We had one dispute, he lost that very quickly :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
