In the middle of lease, moving from CA to WA, what to do?

Hi all,

My Nissan lease has 14 months left, but I need to move from CA to WA for new job. I’m not clear what the procedures are. Would you please help with some information?

My understanding is below, please correct me if I’m wrong.

  1. Drive to WA. (Do I need to information my lessor, the dealer where I made the purchase)
  2. Call Nissan Motor Acceptance to update address.
  3. Go to WA DMV to update title?(not sure about this step, Do they need bills for new address, might take 1 month after I arrive WA)
  4. Return the CA plate by mail.
  5. Ask registration refund from CA DMV (The CA new registration started 3 month ago, I think refund is possible for 9 month left?)

Thank you.

#5 is no go, ca doesnt refund after 1 day, let alone 3 months
nissan will send you some info on how to change plates
Theres some certification in WA you need to do but i dont know the specifcs
Your payment will change slightly due to taxation rules.

I’d probably drive around on the CA plate for a little while to maximize the value of your non - refundable CA registrations. Then after a month or two inform Nissan and go register your vehicle in WA. I would take all lease documents with you to register to avoid a potential two trip experience with the DMV. No need to inform dealer.

As for the bills, just put it on Autopay.

Most states have a requirement to register within 30 days of a change in domicile, OP should double check WA rules, otherwise I agree: not a day 1/week 1 priority.

Most likely will need a POA from NMAC to reregister the car in WA, just call them and request that when updating your mailing address with them.

Thanks for your information. Another concern is lease end. I’m not sure If I have to return it to the CA dealer at lease end? Would Nissan allow to third-party buy-out then?

You can return it to a nissan dealer in wa.

Nissan is currently forcing you to buy from a dealer (anywhere), but that is currently changing as the dealers are adding junk fees
