In Cali, best state to lease from?

Hi, I’m in California and looking to lease a car from Florida. What are some pros or cons about leasing from Florida and shipping to CA.

More generally, are there “good” states and “bad” states to lease from when you’re out of state, specifically in California?

Edit: For example, I read that some states collect tax on pre rebate price. But does that matter if your tax is supposed to California tax?

Thanks

You are in one of the best states to lease a car, getting a car from Florida instead is absurd

What vehicle are you looking for? I can’t think of a scenario in which you will find a better deal in FL ( esp with FL dealer fees ), then pay for shipping, then jump through the registration and smog check hoops on your own and still come out ahead.

Many dealers will not sell to CA due to many potential obstacles out of their control all leading to a negative buyer perception that it is the fault of the dealer. Very similar in that most CA dealers do not deal with out of state purchases.

CA is one of the most competitive markets out there with strong dealer / broker representation on LH where as FL is a good bit lower in terms of representation on LH.

There’s a $7,000 difference between dealer discounts I have found in California and some other states. I’m thinking it’s worth the hassle and $1,200 to ship the car to save $7,000. I’ve read that taxes should be in based on destination. And there’s a broker in LH that says he has good lease deals with Ohio, NJ, etc to ship to many CA clients. I don’t know if he’s just bsing but it seems common to find a good deal out of state and get the car shipped. Is this not true?

What vehicle has a $7k price swing?

this is not true for CA residents, CA has some of the best deals in the country

Bet this is an EQS?

Based off post history of the op, I think it’s a Kia EV9 and it was based off a deal with $5k dealer discount and a bunch of incentives.

I can’t imagine EV9’s going for 2k over MSRP in CA to have a $7,000 swing though.

The thing is, the question isn’t about a particular car. The question is about state rules pertaining to leases. I’m looking at EV9’s but also EQS, but either is irrelevant because it shouldn’t change the rules.

If I wanted help with a particular car, I would have asked that. But that’s not why I started this thread. I’m just curious what the pros and cons are of leasing from out of state and specific state differences

There are no such “rules”.

And any question about pricing differences is very model-specific. Some cars have more regional lease cash than others. Other times it’s just a bad local quote and can most likely be best locally.

As a generality, 100% agree with the others that shipping from FL to CA is an absurd idea. There would have to be some verifiable and massive lease cash delta to justify $3,000+ in shipping and higher dealer fees.

@max_g I agree. That’s why I’m shopping in out of state. When I search cars.com and set distance to unlimited, there are usually cars in other states that come in significantly cheaper. So I’m asking the community what the downsides of buying from out of state are because you can save several thousands. Apparently some people think you should only shop your local dealers but there are a ton of posts on LH about people finding deals and having their cars shipped to them. So that’s why I’m asking

None of the prices you’re seeing on cars.com are accurate representations of what deals are available locally or in other areas.

Paying any attention to dealer advertised pricing is a gigantic wasre of time.
