I4 equity play can I sell/assign a lease like a stock option contract?

Southern California, loaner 2025 BMW i4 xDrive40, 66.5k MSRP. Zero down, $450/mo, 12k/36. Got it in January of this year.

I love the car, but I’m young and I care more about the financials than what I drive. Here’s what’s making me think twice:

  • My buyout through BMW Financial is currently ~$43k.
  • Comparable i4s I’m seeing listed are going for $47k+ - and those have more miles than mine.

I’m familiar with option contracts, and I’m wondering if that same methodology could be applied to a lease contract. So a few questions for the group:

  1. Is there realistically enough equity here to act on - either by buying out and flipping the car, or by selling/assigning the lease contract itself?
  2. What does that process actually look like in practice (buyout + private sale vs. lease transfer/assignment), and are there platforms or dealers in SoCal known for doing this well?
  3. Any pitfalls - sales tax on the buyout, transfer fees, credit checks for the person taking over the lease - that would eat into the equity?

I’m not trying to go carless, this only makes sense to me if I can line up a new lease in the same window, ideally within the same week. I’m car-agnostic, but I would want the new lease to be a hack as well, so I wouldn’t go through all this just to pay $425/mo on a $25k car. Whatever new lease I get would still need to be a hack in its own right. For the numbers to actually work overall, I think I’d need to either net at least ~$3k from selling the car/lease, or land a new lease meaningfully cheaper than my current $450/mo. In a perfect world both could happen

Would love to know if this is a realistic play, and if so, how I should start prepping now so I’m ready to move fast if a good incentive month hits on new leases.

What an awkward title. Take some gmo popcorn and read below.

Equity? i4?

Now that that’s out of the way…
Best case scenario, you put it on SAL and get someone to give you an upfront payment to take it over.

  1. Not enough to be worth the effort.
  2. Swapalease, leasetrader. The Lease transfer market is miniscule, and there’s little in it for dealers to facilitate lease transfers. And there aren’t many captives that allow lease transfers anymore, with BMWFS being the major exception.
  3. Everything you listed, plus the time/effort to find a qualified transferee, and a replacement vehicle. Captives like Porsche FS only allows two applicants before they shut it down for you. Just look at posts in the Transfer section of LH; people flake out, ghost you, or abandon the process mid-way.

Lol I didn’t rly know how else to explain it. Open to title change suggestions. Thank you for the resource I will look through this

What is SAL?

It’s the three letter acronym for Swap A Lease…it’s a marketplace where you can pay to put your vehicle up for a lease transfer and people can find your vehicle for a potential takeover.

We also have a free “Lease Transfer” section here on LH where you can list it should you choose to go this route.

When you read your lease agreement (hopefully before posting), what did you make of the assignment clause?

Yes, you should be able to net about $4,000, possibly a bit more by putting this on SAL and here in private transfers for lease assumption. If you want to save money on the payments, but not necessarily on insurance and fuel, you can look at Genesis g70 or BMW 330 as those can definitely be hacked at lower monthly payments.

Good monthly payment.

split the difference and ask for 2,000 to assume your lease. Maybe you get it. Maybe $1,000 or transfer for zero to get out of the lease. Likely zero.

Look at what carvana would pay for the car. That is your benchmark and not what you see for retail.

My take on it.

Transferring and netting $3,000 is more realistic than finding a hack meaningfully below $450 in today’s EV market

Enough data for G70s signed at about half that in So Cal.

I assumed OP doesn’t want an ICEV but if they do then that’s a great rec.

He clearly stated that he was car agnostic.

OP, not only you’re asking the right questions but you clearly are having the right gut instincts. Cannot believe all the mind numbing absurdly bad advice that has been through the roof here lately and this thread is no exception. People shutting down your transfer idea clearly have never done a single transfer themselves where there are ways to protect yourself as a seller which I have done a number of times.

Do you make over $200 an hour in your day job? Let’s assume you end up spending a lot of time on your first transfer, say 16 hours and then net $3200, both very conservative numbers, is that not worth your time if you can replace your car with something acceptable for a significant reduction on the monthly? Yes, it will take some work but you will also learn things but those negative nancies do not know and are afraid of. I bet most of them don’t know how to trade options either.

Thank you for your perspective and feedback on this. I was a little discouraged reading some of the other messages. I wish i made 200/hr lol. I am fairly busy right now so I might be slow, but I am going to start looking into the prospect of this more in depth. Hopefully I will have something positive to report soon!

been loving the EV, but would not mind an ICEV. Would honeslty be better as I like to do road trips and I have to plan them around charging stations and such

Glad you’re on board, at least in principle. Start researching g70 or possibly 330i if you like those and see if you can locate any loaners as I’m sure you know those are better hacks. Honda Prologue is most likely the only EV that could make sense for what you’re trying to accomplish. Good luck and feel free to circle back when you’re ready to transfer your i4.

I didn’t see anything discouraging here and most of the comments were thoughtful and realistic. If the goal is to pocket some money on a transfer and at the same time move into something with a lower payment, both are achievable. It will take some effort though, mostly on the replacement part.

Maybe CA market is different, but I am struggling on the east cost to find anything I would want to be seen in for anything near what I would consider a decent price. It’s like selling your house when the market is going crazy. It’s great, but you still have to have a place to live.

fries in a bag, bro. this isn’t wsb
