How to see if a used PHEV is eleigoble for the tax credit?

Hi LeaseHackrs. Well the car I leased from Fair.com 4 years ago is finally needs to be replaced. The A/C went and I’m not going to spend more to fix this.

I am looking to buy a used PHEV and I’m having a hard time getting dealers to help me with the tax credit.

I’ve found a used 2018 BMW x5 40e for $25k that has less than 60k miles.

The dealer can’t tell me if this vehicle is eligible for the tax credit. The dealer is saying they just won’t do it.

The Irs website says (Federal Tax Credits for Pre-owned Plug-in Electric and Fuel Cell Vehicles)

For you to receive the credit, the dealer must confirm that your specific vehicle qualifies and must provide you with an IRS time-of-sale report. Not every version of this model will necessarily qualify.

Is there any other way to check to see if a vehicle is eligible for the tax credit?

Does this have to do with the number of owners?

I talked to another dealer in Ohio about an Audi, they said the Audi is not eligible for the tax credit because it has had 3 owners.

Any help anyone could provide on this would be greatly appreciated.

while not perfect, check the Carfax. The EV Credit is for 1 owner cars Model Year 2022 or below. If 2 owner, the dealer has to do a Vin check.

Thanks. How does the dealer do a vin check?

I assume they have some kind of backdoor into Goverment DB.
But as the Dealer would have to float the 4k Point of Sale Rebate, they would definitely make sure a 2 owner car can get it.
