How to get title sooner from DMV in california

Hello, i buyout my lease this week and plan to sell it to 3rd party dealer for some cash back. But after i pay sale tax in local DMV, I was told the title will arrive in 3-6 weeks… Is the any way to get the title back sooner? There is rush title processing service. but someone in DMV hotline told me that’s not for my case. I am so lost… Please share your experience and thought. Thanks.

That’s all correct. I had my lessor released title in 2 weeks from Volvo (hope it’s not an Audi). The 10 day period starts from when you receive the released title. Plenty of threads if you search.

I don’t think you have any other options, but the 2 times I bought out lease cars from the captive and got the car re-titled at DMV, I received my title from DMV in 2-3 weeks. Not sure if it’s longer now. One was in Nov’21, the other was in Sep’22.

I think it’s longer now. DMV hotline said 3-week is very fast at this moment.

Thanks. Then sounds like no one can benefit from the 10-day period for avoiding the sale taxes. That’s basically all my profit by buyout and sell.

I saw from other threads, someone did proved that he purchased the car for sale and got the sales tax back after paid it in DMV. But that was two or three ago so not sure how practical to go through the process though.

You have 10 days from when you receive the released title to sell it and file to recover taxes. Your clock hasn’t started yet.

Thanks! This makes my day. I always thought 10-day starts from the point I received title from BMW financial services. Actually it will start from the point I receive the title from DMV.
