This isn’t just a voyeur thread, it can also serve as a linkable resource to help newer members understand one reason why lease payments can vary so much on two identical deals done in two different states, as first-year registration is generally collected by the dealer at lease inception.
List:
State
Year
Make
Model
Amount
Feel free to toss in other related commentary, like what’s unique about your state or vehicle that impacts registration costs.
(for example, in CA the plate stays with the car, so if you extend a 12/24/36/48 month lease for even one month, you’ll have to pay for an entire additional year of registration)
Both State & City fees collected. The largest portion of fees is collected by the city and is determined by the model year and the base MSRP (before destination and options).
Current model year = 18 mills on each dollar
1st previous model year = 15 mills on each $
2nd previous MY = 12 mills
3rd previous MY = 9 mills
4th prev = 6 mills
5th and older = 3 mills
Registration is based on the owners month of birth. If you register within 4 months of your birth month you will pay for 16 months.
If you sell your car before the registration expires you can transfer it to another car and will be credited for the unused portion. No refunds however.
Standard registration for me is $80ish. I don’t know the exact amount. It’s not based on age or value of the car. If it’s a full size truck or SUV it’s an extra $20. Personalized plates is another $20-50 depending on which plate it is.
I can just tell you all as someone who has run quotes for cars in nearly every state in the country, here are the worst offenders off the top of my head for reg costs:
(In no particular order)
NJ for EV’s - Avg $1,300 for 3 year
Colorado
AZ - VLT on reg
WA State inside the RTA (Sound Transit) Zone
California
Minnesota
Indiana (MVET excise tax)
Michigan (sometimes)
In Florida, the plate is cheaper on a lease compared to a purchase. On a lease, new plate issuance (non customized) runs approximately $130. On a purchase / financed vehicle a new plate issuance can run approximately $400 - $500 depending on the weight class of the vehicle.
Don’t have the exact numbers on me, but for some God-knows-why reason registration on my 23 Ariya is crazy high… around $650 (property taxes included) for a 23 Ariya Empower+.
Weirdly enough, for my 26 Sierra EV Elevation registration came around $300, including property taxes. Even more weird is that I was expecting it to be around 1k due to PPT, EV surcharge and Weighted plates.
