How does ordering a car for leasing work?

I don’t need a car right now, but I need a car in about 5 months, and that’ll be right after coming back from leaving the country. I have been reading the leasehackr articles and it was suggested to custom order a vehicle to lease because I may not have to pay above MSRP. I was considering leveraging this given my circumstance.

If relevant, I’m currently in Texas, and when I come back, I’ll be living in Massachusetts. Cars I’m interested in are the NX/RX 350, Grand Cherokee, and GLA/B/C.

Are there dealerships I could talk with only on the phone or by email about my custom order, since I’d like the car to be sent to Massachusetts?

Could a broker somehow help with this? Or brokers are only relevant for cars already at or incoming to dealerships?

What do I do if the car arrives and I’m still out of the country?

Thanks, and any other tips appreciated.

@Bostoncarconcierge is the man to talk to in Mass.

Yes absolutely. Former broker, did orders all the time.

That’s a little more complicated - usually in person or couriered and notarized paperwork is the way to go.

Ah, so brokers do orders. That’s good to know. I’ve seen some marketplace brokers getting a few percent off MSRP on Lexus and Jeep, so I’ll try that.

And if the car arrives in Massachusetts, I can get someone I know to pick it up? That’ll work.

Thanks for the info!

Correct

Happy to help you order a grand Cherokee for MA as that’s going to the best value of the cars you mentioned - happy to help w that. You will need proof of a MA address to register in state of course

@HersheySweet thanks bubs

You’d be better off financing either of these if you choose to get them.

Hmm, yeah so I’ll only have the Massachusetts place when I get back, so right when I need the car and 5 months from now. Can I register the vehicle then? Or, from what I’m seeing here: https://www.mass.gov/service-details/identity-requirements-for-vehicle-registration
It looks like I can verify in other ways without having anything in Massachusetts yet? Would one of these other methods be alright? Then have someone I know there pick up the car if it gets there before I arrive.

You’ll need some sort of proof of residence or upcoming residence like a lease agreement or mortgage docs etc.

You can have someone else pickup and the docs can be mailed to Texas

Thanks again. I think I have it about all figured out. What would be the easiest way to get proof of address? I have close family in Massachusetts. I can change all my bank account addresses to their house once I move out of here. So I can get a debit card and credit card statement with their address. I can get workplace proof (remote working from a company in Massachusetts, can change my address on their end to my family’s address). I can make the car insurance address their address too. Would that be enough? Or would I need still more verification? I can’t get a lease agreement until after I find a place once I get back… no idea how long that’ll take. The family may be stingy about getting on their utility or house bills.
