How do they calculate DMV fees for out of state purchases?

I am buying my car out of state and the dealer put $500 for DMV fees.

I know WIS title is like $165 and then $85 for registration…are they just adding $250 onto real cost for profit? Or could I be missing something.

They may be padding it so they don’t get left holding the bag.

There’s the actual cost of the Reg fee
Most likely a runner or plate service
And then some excess which they should theoretically refund you

Just make sure you get the excess back.

This. Dealers will either leave the reg to you or use a runner service which tacks on anywhere from $100-$200 in registration costs.

They always charge more, you probably will get a refund in 2-3 months. I’m in NY and leased cars from Atlanta and Washington dc and both times received a refund around $180.

Most dealers will use a third party registration company that charges a fee usually around $150. I have worked for some dealers that will either collect the exact amount or add a few hundred dollars for any padding (any excess should be returned to you). Some states will also have temp tag fees. That is probably why it is “extra” for out of state registration.
