How do I register a car that I leased from an out of state dealership?

This is probably a dumb question but every other time I’ve leased a car, the dealership pretty much took care of it all for me.

Last month I bought a car through a broker who arranged it with a dealership in Maryland and then had it shipped to me in NJ. Between the broker and the shipping, my only interaction with the dealership was signing some paperwork online… Is getting it registered even on me to do, or should I be calling the dealer to harass them about it?

I was kind of hoping I’d get some paperwork in the mail from them, but my temp plates expired at the end of the month so trying to figure out what next steps I need to be taking.

Have you tried maybe asking the broker that you paid to for his services ?

Usually on the dealer, they have to do it.

I had a dealer in Ohio once that said I had to do it. Mostly the dealer will do it though. Have a conversation with them about expectations. The Ohio dealer was upfront that they didn’t handle anything out of state. They sent me the cert of origin and power of attorney and I went to dmv with that and odometer disclosure and copy of lease and got it done. Title went to leasing company and plates to me with certificate of ownership showing me as lessee.

Dealer should do it unless you were told in the beginning that you are supposed to register it yourself. Even then, dealer will need to send you the MSO and bunch of other paperwork so you can take them to your local DMV.

Talk to the tag & title department of the dealer. If you don’t receive a response ask the broker.

The dealer should be handling it, and your broker should be the one answering this question in about 20 seconds.

Customers doing plates/reg on their own leases is almost unheard of, not impossible, but it almost never happens.

What kind of car is this?

Also, MD dealers should be able to send you another temp tag

Fair point! I haven’t because communication with them kinda sucked throughout the whole process.

I’ve been in Florida for a few brokered out of state deals here. I think one dealer from KS delivered with out of state temp tags while they waited for the all okay from FL for me to register the vehicle once FL Tax Collector got the necessary documents from them. And I am currently waiting for a shipper to take bid and pick up car from MA.. that dealer chose to do all the registration themselves and would only ready the car to ship once they received the FL registration/license plates

Both scenarios the dealer needs to get in touch with your state DMV/Tax collector. If you are experiencing delays (they usually have up to 30 days) then make sure you are talking to your broker on expedition around 3 weeks or so

Did you sign any NJ DMV paperwork through the dealer?

The dealer will swnd something to your local county clerk and after that you can bring document they send to you with the car such as contract and power of attorney to your county clerk to pay tax and registration. The dealer should know and told you how to do it.
The only thing you need to pay attention is that you need to pay tax in the registration. So your payment to dealer before should have no tax.

no. no they won’t.

Every dealer has differnt workflow and im not in ny or nj. so thats possible this dealer is different. But the registration should be easy if op has all the documents.
