How can I purchase out of state car and register in MA?

I’m looking at buying a used EV in NY at a Hyundai dealership, but I live in MA. They want me to use their financing to get the discount (which I intend to pay off ASAP). But the RMV needs the title to register it, right? Which I don’t think the dealer will give me since I don’t own it. Ideally I’d like my plates transferred, but new plates are fine too. My plan is to sell my current EV to Carvana once I have the new car. Do I need an RMV runner service to do the registration? Or is Hyundai likely to be able to handle that themselves? If anyone has done this before, I’d love to know the process.

Many dealers don’t do MA deals due to the RMV process being a bit funny.

That said, just try to convince your dealer to use this company and all should go fine: https://iymansregistryservice.com/

+1 for iyman. Have used him for 3 oos deals and each one has been smooth and quick

If you are transferring plates, that makes the process even easier.

How can you transfer plates if you do t own the vehicle assuming plates are in buyer’s name.

As IAC said, you need to use a runner / dmv service. It takes a few days given the mailing back and forth plus a day for the runner to hit the registry. Add in a weekend and it can take a week. Need to have patience, remember, it’s your problem not theirs (it’s a MA thing).

OPs plates on current vehicle can be transferred to newly acquired vehicle.

For a leased vehicle, aren’t the plates registered in the name of the leasing company? Maybe MA is different, but I have never been able to do that in MD when moving from lease to lease.

For leased, yes and no. OP is buying, so non issue.

just call iyman. he’ll tell you exactly what you need from out of state dealership. once he has docs he needs, he’ll take care of it within 1-2 business days. he’s worth every penny, excellent service.
