How are NJ/PA dealers handling the new NJ EV registration?

I’ve read that dealers are just charging the regular DMV registration fees for a 2 year lease and then NJ will end up billing the EV owner separately for the new EV registration fee of $250 annually.

But then I read some dealers are making you pay 4 years of EV registration up front at lease acquisition which makes no sense to me.

Anyone do an AV deal in NJ this month that can provide some insight? Thanks.

NJ is forcing the dealers to collect the registration. I paid $500 to the dealer for my 2 year lease. Note: This was for a PA dealer. I believe they told me they had to collect 4 years of EV registration for a purchase.

Interesting. A few buddies in August leased EVs and they were only charged regular registration and NJ would bill them for the EV fee, but that in September, the dealers would then be the ones collecting from the customer at acquisition the regular DMV and EV fees.

The state is so disorganized – shocker.

They keep going back and forth on this.

1st dealers were collecting it
2nd they weren’t and the state was going to bill directly
3rd now we are supposed to collect it

Get ready for july 2025 when EVs will cost more than ICE vehicles in NJ. LMAO.

the dealer lobby in nj is working very hard for that not to happen. i think it will settle at half tax. full tax and higher ev reg puts dealers who push evs pretty much out of business.

I believe in pa they legally have to

The State of New Jersey doesn’t even know what The State of New Jersey is doing.
