Honda Odyssey Lease or Buy

Hi all,

My wife wants a Honda Odyssey, EX or EX-L. We are living in SoCal.

I would like to ask if you think which one would be a better option lease/buy new (2018 or 2019) or buy used (2016, 2017)?

How many miles per year do you drive? What’s your budget?

Leasing really only makes sense for those who drive like 10-15k miles let yr. Furthermore, Hondas don’t lease well so off the top of my head I’d suggest buying a late year, (2016+) low mileage (10k/year) CPO.

I would personally buy, you won’t get a good lease on an EX or EX-L - likely will run you over 400 a month with minimal drive offs, maybe even close to 500.

And if you buy a used 16 or 17, keep in mind it’s the previous model.

Having owned two odysseys for 9 and 7 years I’m not so sure buying is that much better. We HAD to buy extended warranty both times because I was afraid of sliding door and tranny issues; and used the warranty many many times. Door suspension tranny rust and on and on. Also, regular maintenance and tires brakes etc. in the end, monthly cost was about 300 and 340 for these two minivans so less than leasing. But I would pay 100 extra to have a new one every three years without the hassle of all that extra service work. Plus new technology, safety, etc every three years is nice.

There are some quality issues with 18/19 Odyssey with entertainment system, sliding doors, panel gap etc. Read the odyclub forum to educate yourself. At this point if it was me I would lease a Pacifica.
