Here's a new one (for me)

Here’s a new one for me…
Dealer and I are negotiating terms of a lease on a demo car in inventory. They are out of state, so contact is strictly via text message and time consuming. Yesterday, we iron out the details and I was told that the new car manager would be in this morning to confirm everything. This morning comes and we confirm, they tell me to commit to it because someone else is test driving currently, and who ever acts first gets the deal. I “act first” by filing a credit app and ready to leave the deposit. Only to be told after the credit app, that the other client is in the car currently so they have right of first refusal. It gets better… after some back and forth, I ask them to let me know ASAP. I’m told the client has the car till Monday. I told them I am done, thank you but no thank you.

Am I crazy for thinking that this is some garbage move on the part of the dealer to secure me as a backup while making me think I’m first in line?

New for you but nothing new in the industry unfortunately.

Oldest trick in the history of this business.

No I get that trick. But to actually have the car loaned out for the entire weekend, while asking for my commitment, which I gave, is insane!

I’d move on, doesn’t sound like a dealer that deserves your time or business.

Definitely agree.

I’m curious if they come back Monday to offer you a car. Or even tomorrow😀

They either (1) had a buyer physically in person that could drive it home that day vs an out of state deal which often falls apart, or (2) NCM was unhappy with the terms of the deal negotiated and was looking for an out.

In the words of Elsa, let it go.

I’m going with (1). They likely have someone in under more favorable terms for them, but that person wants the weekend to think it through, which is why they tried to secure me into position 2.

I’m already re-trading their deal with other stores, and am not ashamed to admit it.

LOL, I’ll keep you posted

What fun would car shopping be without lying salespeople and dealers ? When you deal with them, be polite, but know all along that they are very capable of being ethically challenged.

Play their game too - For fun and profit ! Instead of saying you’re out, bump your bid by a few grand …

Then when they call to close the deal on monday, tell em you found another car.

The car is a loaner, so could have easily been given to someone by service department until Monday. Doesn’t change the fact that they probably lied about having a buyer for it.
I was leaving home to test drive an Evoque loaner once when I got a call that it just got flat tire. Sounded fishy, but OK. So I canceled, but later saw on carfax that a tire was replaced.

Update: dealer came back into the picture this morning, as a few of you predicted. Working on renegotiating the deal, since my offer to them expired on Friday

Why don’t you share the info on your demo deal and the pricing you’re working on so others can weigh in and advise you if its possible to make better.

I’ve bottomed out on the deal and am taking it

Year, Make, Model, and Trim: 2019 BMW M850i xDrive Convertible
MSRP: $126,750
Selling Price: $94,080
Monthly Payment: $883 (incl tax 8.625%)
Drive-Off Amount: $2,500 + shipping
Months: 36
Annual Mileage: 7,500
MF: 0.00148 (I know, I know)
Residual: 56%
Incentives: $3,000 Loyalty
Region: NY
Leasehackr Score: 12.4 years

I don’t think we’ve seen many (any?) M850i convertible deals. I assume your deal is prob pretty good. Is the discount huge? If so, a marked up MF (assuming it’s marked up) is reasonable.

Yes, 25.8% pre loyalty. Includes flagship $$$. I was fine with the marked up MF because the discount was a lot more than anything else I’ve seen.
