Thanks to the help here we are finally buying out a 2019 Civic LX lease. BTW I was able to get a 18 month lease extension so the buyout with tax was just over 10K. My questions are around title transfer with NJ DMV as my son is buying car from my MIL. Car is paid off and MIL got title in mail from Honda showing them as seller and she as buyer.
So the paperwork from Honda says we have to the bill of sale and CoT reflecting transfer of ownership. I’m confused as it also says you must submit these documents to your local dmv in order to transfer ownership and registration in your name.
How does my MIL transfer to my son. Does she have to get title and register even if my son is buying at the same time or can we simplify that process as she’d being signing over title (which I assume she still doesn’t have? ) to my son right away.
If they can go together with the paperwork everything can be done in one MVC visit.
Either the clerk titles & registers your son directly if possible or they print grandma’s title on the spot, have her sign and gift it, and then issue your son’s title and reg immediately thereafter
Thanks for the quick response. Seeing a certificate of title right away before reading details we thought that was the title in the mail. We were trying to avoid her going as she doesn’t get around well with recent hip surgery.
Oh and when a vehicle is gifted is it required to fill out a number whether it be 0 or $1 or is that just left blank.
We are just grateful for m my son getting 2019 Civic with only 7K miles for 10K
