Help with 2020 RAV4 Lease

My younger sister is looking to lease a 2020 RAV4 XLE Premium or XSE hybrid for 36 months, 12k a year. $0 down in El Paso, TX. Her credit score is 775 and 8 years old (opened first account in 2012).

She has returned briefly from New York City due to COVID-19 and the lease for her 2017 Rogue SV is ending. She pays $378.72 for a 36 mo/12k miles lease signed in May 2017, in Austin, Texas. Put $928.42 down, including first payment.

A local Nissan dealer where she’ll return the vehicle to, has offered on a 2020 SL FWD w/Premium package $459 per month for 36/12k/$0 down from $469 and $486. MSRP is $35,080. They brought it to our house on Tuesday and showed us the vehicle.

We wanted the 2021 Rogue, but it’s not available until August 2020.

One of 2 local Toyota dealers has offered this on 2020 RAV4 XSE Hybrid ($40,276). They brought another white XSE ($38k) to our residence and did a test drive on Monday.

And this on a cheaper RAV4 XLE Premium($33k), which isn’t to our liking in missing some stuff.

The next dealer, which also sells Lexus, is who we want to go with.

I inquired about a 2020 XSE Hybrid in Blueprint like this and they told me it would $556 at lowest, for 36/12 at $0 down.

I then found a 2020 XLE Premium FWD with tech and weather. We were shown the vehicle on Wednesday morning and approved for $480, with $0 down.

Problem is, my father will pay for it while she’s in NYC again and he feels we need to do better on the price. I am exasperated, because I am trying to find a vehicle that she will like in blue or in white/black, which he will also use while she is away.

He drives her 2017 Rogue SV as a beater, when not using his $130,000 2019 750i M-Sport for hospital rounds. My mother drives a GLE 43 AMG “Coupe”, she favours a mid-grade compact crossover. I would like something they can be content with, when not driving their luxury cars. They’ve complained about the Rogue in her absence.

It’s annoying the hell out of me, because I don’t see my dad’s point here. Are the dealers screwing us over or is it a good deal? We are in 79911 zip code and tax is 6.25%

None of these sound like good deals… they sound like exactly the shit offers you’d expect from walking cold into a dealership

I’m honestly exasperated and at a loss of what to do in this case, because they claim it’s the best they can do.

In Texas it includes the price with taxes, not the taxes on lease payment unfortunately.

What should I shoot for? Her score is 775 and we’re putting $0 down.

Never, ever go into a dealership to talk numbers until you already know exactly what the vehicle should cost. (and then don’t go in until you’ve negotiated it remotely and are just going in to take delivery).

These deals are atrocious. There is no reasonable justification on this planet to spend $450/mo on a nissan rogue.

First and foremost, STOP talking to dealers.

Then, step back and do more research on what’s available at those price points. You’re in X3/XC60 money here.

I have done the research and have noticed that, but the problem is calculating taxes and associated fees in one payment for full comparison.

It seems almost impossible to get better figures, which doesn’t make sense. Is it the lack of money down? This seems to be the case with non-luxury badge crossovers.

Luxury crossovers are more reasonable but for some reason my father has a mindset we shouldn’t dare go with anything luxury nameplate, as long as he is going to be “involved”. His expectations are frustrating, as I’m a middleman in this for both father and daughter.

Ironically this is what Nissan said.

The two rav 4 deal sheets you’re showing have very low discount amounts on them to start with. Now, on a hybrid, that doesn’t surprise me, as they’re popular right now and the dealers aren’t motivated to sell that at big discounts. On the other, though, there’s no reason this should go so high.

Beyond that, you need more info to see if they’re rolling in incentives or the mf is marked up, making things worse.

No way they’re losing money on a rogue at $460/mo

Do you mean the Rogue? I expected much less in being an older vehicle developed from 2009 to 2013 and on its way out for a new generation. The last major update was 3.5 years ago, for MY 2017 so I expected better from them.

It does include taxes at 6.25% and other fees, so that’s still correct even with taxes?

Even with that included… no way.

Even if they are, there’s no reason you should pay them that for it.

Maybe you can check TrueCar to see what people are getting off MSRP for the vehicles and start there?

Thank you for your sound advice. What do you think we should do in this case? Biggest issues are:

My father rejects getting a luxury badge product, thus she won’t get anything he doesn’t like.

Dealers aren’t budging. I tried El Monte Toyota in California, no answer yet.

Tried Atlanta dealers (where family is), World Toyota quoted $777 a month for a 36 month/12k miles RAV4 XSE Hybrid Lease, $0 down.

Lexus/Toyota dealer says this:

I have and it’s not much.

You need to start over, look for a luxury brand with tax credits, you’ll pay the same as these and she’ll end up with a nicer ride.

Father is insistent on not getting a luxury brand for some stupid a** reason. Leasing mostly favors luxury brands or most bottom-of-the-barrel economy spec cars.

Whenever it concerns me and my choices, I get what I want regardless of what anyone thinks. Since he’ll be paying for it when she is in Manhattan, she wants to abide by what he wants.

We’re the leading forum, I think you might do some research on the social worker forum for this one.

That aside, you should probably get a luxury suv. That’s the price range you’re sitting around.
Maybe keep those quotes and present an equal or lesser quote for a luxury suv.

Give him a couple different price options. “For $450, you can get a Nissan Rogue or a Volvo XC60”

Or look at other vehicles that aren’t a toyota or a nissan. CR-V wouldn’t be a bad choice.

You should draw up a lease deal based on RV, MF, and incentives from Edmunds and try it with a 10% off MSRP discount pre incentives. And if you are looking for RAV4 alternatives, you could look at the Mazda CX-5, GMC Terrain, Forester, or Tiguan? Those are the RAV4 alternatives I was looking at

$474+ for CRV EX-L in blue

Not sure with or w/o taxes included.
