HEADS UP DISPLAYS - Who loves them, who's meh about them, which car has the best?

Older Volvos have it too, as in next turn and a distance countdown. That is very useful to be fair…if you remember to look at it!

Edit - assume you mean shows Android Auto directions too

Big peeve for me with Volvo is that Carplay directions aren’t shown on the dash nav. Assume again that’s not needed with the change to google maps navigation in the new models

Not to be that guy, but it’s “head-up display.” :stuck_out_tongue:

“Heads up” is something a youth sports coach (or someone who’s acting like one) says.

I mentally subtract intelligence points from adults who use the phrase in routine communications.

[not you, OP  ]

Don’t discriminate against us with two heads mate!

Hence the carve-out.

This is what makes a HUD useful on my opinion. My 18 Accord touring showed android auto directions in the HUD. I really liked that. Volvo doesn’t do it so HUD is much less useful. Ideally I’d like directions, radio and speedometer in my HUD.

Pretty ‘meh’ on them, but the newer BMW one is nice (shows nav directions, radio info/tracks, and it’s larger than most). Had it in two cars and wouldn’t go out of my way to get HUD again. It also makes windshield replacement substantially more costly (for those of us that live in mountain flying rock land).

Big fan of the one in my new X7. More configurable than the one from my 2019 X5.

The most disappointing one I’ve been in, at least for luxury cars, was in a Range Rover from ~3 years ago. It was a bit small and slightly pixelated. I’m sure they’ve upgraded in the new ones, but it looked much lower tech than the BMW version.

The new hud is decent, from what I’ve seen

Ok yes that looks more befitting of the Range

For $1,000 - I’d think hard about it.

That’s odd. I thought most HUDs were projected from the dash. I can see the driving assist cameras and sensors embedded in the area where the rearview mirror is mounted making the windshield replacement very costly.

Not a must have (although I would always check the box), but if you have had one and then go back to a car without one, it kind of sucks.

Gives me a headache from trying to focus on two different depth perceptions. Turned it off in my Rx f sport.

I didn’t realize that my '21 Sonata had it until I took delivery. I have to say I think I would struggle to go back to a car without it. I find the blind spot indicator in the HUD extremely useful. That and the side mirror cameras when changing lanes is awesome imo.

I think they are cool but wouldn’t pay thousands to get one in a package. maybe a couple hundred as a standalone option

I once thought they were the coolest thing and even took apart my brand new C6 Corvette dash apart to add one back in the day. Now that I have experienced a few, I like them, but not a huge deal. Navigation directions seem to be the most useful to me if offered. Maybe a tach if I was drag racing?

Yeah, had to buy a cheapie non-polarized shades for a 530e with HUD after losing my old Ray Bans this Memorial Day weekend exactly 30 years after getting them for a 1992 Camry test drive… over a Memorial Day weekend. Anyone still has a free toaster from that era???

Oh, and I do like BMW HUD, no other point of reference though.
