I guess I haven’t been paying attention. Are GX550s selling above MSRP? I didn’t realize they were hard to get.
I need to buy an SUV that meets the 6000lb GVWR for the accelerated tax deduction. Previously had a 4Runner that only saw 3-4k miles over 3 years. I think I will be driving this new SUV a little more though still pretty low miles.
Any thoughts on the GX vs LC for T4R in terms of drivability (no off-roading) and resale values? I know the previous generation LC and T4R held their values really well. And the GX seems to be hot right now but I don’t know if that will continue over 3-4 years.
As a point of reference, the current GX has been on the market since the '24 model year. I got on a waiting list in May at my Lexus dealer for an Overtrail trim and was told expect my number to come up in about 9 months. It would be an MSRP deal. In my area (Dallas/Ft Worth), if you want one now you have to buy used and they are selling from $5k to $10k over MSRP on the Lexus dealers used car lots. I was also told by my salesguy that Lexus has cut capacity on the GX. Lexus is trying to keep this car hot. I think we’ll be seeing big money on these for a few years at least. Unless something catastrophic/dramatic happens in the market.
The GX will be a “pay to play” vehicle for a while I think.
Typical wait is 60-90 days for Prem+. Premiums are special orders, could take 6+ months. You can be lucky and grab a Lux+ off a lot in certain regions.
I really liked the GX550 on a test drive–definitely has shades of a Gwagen in how it drives for a fraction of the price. I was scared off by the potential engine issues and thought the car would be redundant in my garage.
I’m usually not a big SUV fan, but I find the Land Cruiser and GX quite appealing, design-wise (but it’s totally out of my price range, and I live in an urban area and have a pretty tight parking spot at work (getting in/out of the spot, not just the spot itself).
Good to know that the GX will likely hold its value really well, in case I ever make the $$$.
I would say in this market any discount from MSRP with no dealer add is a win. These aren’t for the bargain hunter. If you want it, you’re going to have to pay. Only good thing is you’ll do better on the back-end vs so many other SUVs. Resale has been historically high for the GX and seems like much more so in this current generation. Until supply/demand gets into balance expect the used market to be good on these (assuming you’re the original owner selling, not the person looking to buy a used one). It’ll be interesting if in time they will continue to hold value. A big part of the previous 2 generations good resale was the bullet proof reliability of the naturally aspirated V8. These new ones are V6 turbos and Lexus/Toyota has not had good luck with them.
I had one of the first LC cars in my state when this gen first came out. My wife was really mad at me when I eventually sold it to make room for another car. It was a very likeable car. Great size and driving position, almost Range Rover-esque. The interior felt high quality too with plenty of physical buttons as opposed to the touchscreen-heavy GX interior. The drivetrain was a little rough but torquey, befitting the body-on-frame offroad truck character. It did feel like you could drive over anything and it wouldn’t be bothered by the impact.
As for the downsides, I remember the cabin being a little loud at speed due to the vertical windshield design, rear seats being somewhat tight for the size, and the fuel economy being unimpressive for a hybrid Toyota vehicle…
I have a choice between a Premium Plus or an Overtrail. The Overtrail is a better color. Aside from the obvious feature differences, is one more desirable or harder to get than the other?
Overtrail - you get kdss and a good wheel and tire - the other trims don’t make sense - Lexus isn’t what it used to be - wood and leather lathered all across
