First car in 15 years. Need some advice

Hi all-

I moved from NYC to Miami about 6 weeks ago, and have not had a car for the 15 years I was in NYC. Last car I owned was a 2000 Montero Sport; it’s been that long.

Anyways, I was close to buying a 2025 used Audi Q5 for a bit over $40k, but I came across this community and would rather lease if I can find a good deal.

That said, I’d rather not have a $700 or $800 payment, so the Audi is out for now. Trying to stay under $600/mth.

Thinking of going for a black BMW X3 (see attached). Are the pre negotiated good deals generally decent, or can I find better? Fees a bit high here?

Trying to do as much research as possible here but any guidance would be appreciated. I’m generally good with negotiating and getting a good deal in life, but I’ve been out of the car game for so long that I’d rather just go through a broker here.

Thanks!

I’d say go with a broker too… path of least resistance.

Another suggestion - pick a make/model and get an insurance quote. You may need to shop around a lot, especially not having continuous coverage for so long.

Welcome. South Florida dealers are known throughout the planet as dens of thieves, irrespective of your negotiating skills.

Every black car is my last black car, and it’s not nearly as hot here as Florida, nor do we have as many bugs. I would think twice about any other color besides black.

Spend some time here in the Marketplace and Shared Deals to see what’s leasing well-ish, and get out and test drive some cars. Nobody here is going to drive your lease, often what is cheap may have drawbacks you can’t live with.

Ask questions and post a deal check here before signing anything. Happy shopping!

Holy moly.

I think I’ve had about 40… maybe 50 cars since your last one.

Wow that crazy.

Another suggestion is to go into the lease transfer section. Maybe finding something there that you can take over. Otherwise I’d agree. Broker for sure

I know, it’s insane. Really no need for a car in Manhattan and generally doesn’t make sense with parking being $500 to $700/month. Just rented cars frequently, every time we needed to get out of town, etc.

Thanks for the advice. Will look into lease transfer. At first glance does the deal I posted in my original post look solid to you?

You’re gonna have issues there… without a recent history of an auto installment or lease, it’s gonna be tough. You’ll have better luck financing or getting your own lease. Work with a broker… the pre-negotiated deals are fine too.

Oh, and having worked in manhattan for many years, I totally agree you don’t need a car there :joy:

Hey all -

I just posted separately that I haven’t had a car in 15 years (been living in Manhattan), and just moved to Miami so I’m looking into my first ever lease.

Thoughts on this deal:

New glc300 White on Black Base 26
-Drive off is around 2200 (first payment dmv bank fee)
-36/10k
-565 plus tax = 600
-999 broker fee

-Buy rate at 0.00185
-Res is 59%

Thoughts?

EDIT - Broker just texted with the below update

Sorry I had the wrong mf

I used 25 vs 26 It’s 0.00245

Takes you to about 651 total

Just wait until Nov-Dec. You’ll save some money.

And someone, who never lived in NY, won’t understand how one can live without a car there.

Not sure why so many folks on here just say go with a broker. I guess if someone is asking such basic question, that is their recommendation as most will not spoon feed

99% of the broker deals here are meh at best, then add in their ridiculous fee like this $999 and you should be able to match that on your own with very little effort.

Some broker deals are LH worthy, but usually involve shipping as well as the fee and that not only adds more cost, but introduces other factors as well.

Also, everyone’s opinion of what is a “good deal” is different. Some seek the absolute lowest payment, some want the lowest payment on the car they “want” so keep that in mind when you ask the question.

So, use the marketplace for reference as well as signed deals and ask the hackers deal checks for data points. Figure out what you can live with and without and then maybe join super supporter for access to rate finder.

Good luck.

Well that’s the premise this entire forum is based on. A deal needs to be better than what you posted, though. Those are meh at best.

Can’t really pick a car and ask how you can get a good lease deal on it. A good lease deal is predicated on the RV/MF/rebate set by the bank. Up until 9/30/25 the only good deals that weren’t BEVs were mostly PHEVs. That is mostly over.

Right now it’s slim pickings for leases. You can see what the Infiniti QX60 looks like in your zip. The rebates are regional and they’re pretty good near NYC among other places. Otherwise you’re better off buying a brand new Lexus

Forget finding a deal at first. Assuming you can get around freely for the moment, take some time to figure out what kind of car you actually want to drive. Go to some dealerships and take some models out for test drives, even if they’re slightly out of your budget. Figure out what options you can and can’t live with on your models of choice. I can’t imagine not having a car for 15 years and getting stuck with some fancy piece of crap that you hate driving. Driving is ALL there is down here, so you better make sure you’re comfortable and enjoying it at the very least.

Also, do not, on pain of death, get an electric car unless you can charge at home!

I’ll echo what others have said regarding insurance. My best friend moved from CT to Boca about 3 years ago. Insurance premiums in South Florida are eye watering to say the least. You’ll probably get quoted rates as if you are a “new driver.” Be prepared to pay up, prey you don’t have to file a claim, and shop rates again in 6 months to a year. Enjoy the sunshine!

I can get you a better deal than the pre-negotiated deal, and I can see what my local dealership will do so that you don’t have to ship, unless the deal is much better from out of state.

For example, I have dealerships with doc fees less than half of that doing 10-12% off. That would take care of shipping. But, my local dealership may be motivated for month-end, so feel free to reach out:

Not sure what you want us to tell you if you’re saying you want to stay at under 600 per month and the prenegotited deal has an effective payment of 625 not even accounting for Taxes and Broker fees. Posts like this suggest you should probably use a broker.

Insurance in Miami is mad expensive.
