As everyone knows, the market is insane right now, especially on new minivans. I found a lower milage van at CarMax and just wondering if anyone has any experience with their warranty? The car is a 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan with 30k miles. I know Dodge isn’t know for their reliability which is why I am strongly considering the warranty. Thanks!
- i would not buy a car from the max
- the warranty does pay up

Didnt doug demuro buy an aston martin with one of those extended care plans too?
and it paid off too
@conanohasselhof has been milking Carmax for years
Carmax unfortunately does not sell Aston’s or anything more premium than Porsche. Doug bought a cpo Aston.
I’ve never lost on a cmax warranty. But I buy mostly depreciated German sporty cars, where the cost of the car is just the entry point. In total I’d say cmax has paid out 15k in repairs, I’ve paid about $750 In deductibles, and probably $4000 in net cost after selling the remainder of the warranties back. Only issue I’ve ever had is one of my local Porsche dealerships wouldn’t deal with the warranty during Covid, but another just a bit further away did. Hope that helps, feel free to message me if you need more info.
Great thank you so much for you feedback and input. I haven’t gotten the exact price for the warranty but it seems to be a no brainer, plus the fact you can get a prorated refund when you sell the vehicle. Have you had any luck getting Carmax to replace the tires when you purchased if they were nearing end of life?
Could you give more insight why you wouldn’t buy from Carmax? Sure they seem to be a little bit more on the higher side, but between the warranty and lower (south Florida here) dealer fees it seems to come out ahead from other used car places around. Carmax seems to bend over backwards to make you happy. Now if only they/Hyundai would process a lease buyout…lol.
I have not, but honestly with the cars I’m buying I’d rather they didn’t replace them because they are the absolute cheapest crap they can find that will fit the rim.
You shouldn’t buy anything from CarMax or others like carvana. Worst cars you can get
My take is you need to inspect them just as closely as any other car from any other used car dealer. To say you blanket should not buy is, to me, a bit extreme but many cars are not winners. If I could get exactly what I wanted, in reasonably good shape, and tack on a maxcare warranty (which even my BMW shop swears by), then why not?
Put another way: many of us sell our cars to carvana, CarMax, etc. Are you saying you wouldn’t buy a car someone like you maintained?
Carmax has a few benefits that really prop it up:
- 30 day return policy gives you plenty of time to get a PPI and return the car if it’s an obvious lemon. I did on my first Panamera.
- MaxCare is underwritten by Fidelity and equivalent to their platinum level coverage, which is one of the best out there. Not to mention it’s dirt cheap - I’m guessing the folks they swindle into buying warranties for reliable Toyotas is bringing the average warranty cost down for the unreliable Range Rovers and V8 BMW/Mercs they sell.
This was one of the items that made me return the Panamera. Tires were “just” over the min tread depth and were about 2 months from being aged out. They wouldn’t replace them because that still met their standards. Tires about $2k a set on the Panny.
Edit: *Assurant might be the current underwriter. It was Fidelity as of April 2022. Not to say it’s any worse, just adding in case anyone reads this later.
A Dodge doesn’t seem too bad for MaxCare warranty, but my personal experience with them wasn’t all that great when I had it for a 135i with the N54 a few years back. They discovered a rattling noise coming from the engine at certain rpm when I was trying to sell said car and they refused to go any further without me authorizing a 2k teardown first to determine whether or not my issue falls under MaxCare.
So you were trying to sell them your 135i, which was previously purchased from them (and under MaxCare)?
Was your MaxCare deductible $2k?
My main concerns are:
-
What’s the price and why is it a good price?
-
Is it a former rental?
-
Are you saving from a TCO perspective? An Odyssey or Sienna will cost more upfront but it will also be worth a lot more. And without the extra maintenance costs
There is/was a member who works at Carmax. Somebody tag him please?
I was quoted $2550 on a 60 month (from date of purchase) up to 75k mile with $300 deductible for a 2018 M240i Convertible. That’s wild to me. I have no idea how the finances of that work out.
Total or from purchase?
Total. Car in question has 16k miles on the odometer.
