EV Road Tax Bill

Looks like Louisiana has started enforcing the road tax for EV and hybrid vehicles, law was passed in 2024. I just ignored the checkbox on the tax form but now they are sending bills to the owners with a due date of June. It is 110 per EV and 60 per hybrid. The reasoning is ev and Hybrid owners don’t pay the road tax that is collected in the price of gas.

Any other state has these backwards thinking type of taxes??

VA gives you the option of paying a flat fee or installing a monitoring device in your car where you pay by use. Paying by use will never be more than the flat fee.

I’ve always opted to just pay the flat fee instead of allowing the state to monitor me.

When I lived in MI the state sent out a survey asking about this, one of the options presented was a mandatory GPS tracker that would report the number of miles you drove on public roads each year…

In Texas you pay an additional $200/year to renew your BEV registration.

In Florida you get paid to drive an EV  just kidding please dont move here !

You would get free tolls on Express lanes which could run upto $200 - $250 per month but that got killed last year in October.

Yep, PA charge $200 on 2024, $250 on 2025 and adjusted for inflation after that. It’s equivalent to 13k miles per year in gas tax. My annual miles are lower than that Urggh.

Ok and? Some peoples EV usage probably evens it out.

we can debate over the details and the best way to implement it but I don’t see a logical reason why EV drivers should get to avoid paying for the roads, that their heavier cars are more likely to damage

I mean that’s how other people paying for the roads…

I have no problems paying it and $100-200 per year seems reasonable.

It’s not backwards, otherwise how do they charge you? By adding to the electricity so you will pay for the road when running your AC?

I am not complaining paying the tax but tax me fairly based on my usage, not a flat fee. The state can easily see my usage during annual regs renewal or on annual inspection.

An average driver (cars and trucks) gets 25 MPG and drives 12K miles a year. That’s 480 gallons a year. Gas tax in LA is 21 cents which is $101. Charging EV drivers an extra 10% seems fair given the extra weight of EVs.
