Hi , quick question on wear and tear. Looking at a 15k/36 lease and Im concerned about the need for new brakes and tires at the end of lease (although looks like 3 free maintenance on the first 3 years at volvo so probs no brakes). So i dont want to pay for tires, period. Can i get this stated in the lease or negotiate for “tire and wheel protection” or “wear & tear” or whatever package I’m sure they will throw at me?
You can purchase wear and tear coverage. Not sure why you think that they would make a special exception and exempt you from paying for tires if the tread is too low.
Make sure their free maintenance includes brakes. Not all plans do.
I did a 15k/39 month lease and the free maintenance is really by miles, not years. It’s every 10k miles, so since I had 15k a year, I had used my free maintenances within the first 2 years, and then was responsible for the 40k maintenance (which was a doozy on the XC90) and brakes and tires. Did tires once, around 35-38k. They were pretty low on the tread and was told there was no way they would make it to end of lease without Volvo charging for new ones, so I bought them, since it was before winter figuring I might as well get use out of the new tires instead of buying them at the end for someone else.
It really also depends on your driving habits, where you live/road conditions, highways vs. local streets, which tires are the stock tires - a number of variables. I have over 31,000 miles on my 2017 S60, and my tread on my tires is great (confirmed by dealership in the last week), so I’m not going to put tires on my car. I would like to get the wheel and tire package next time because I hit a pothole in the dark a year ago that swallowed 4 other cars just when I hit it, and I had to buy a tire, plus there were other close calls (but I’m also in areas where roads are like Swiss cheese). However, even now, I was quoted “$695 is our best price” and they weren’t willing to throw it in.
Volvo’s free maintenance is just an oil change and software update. Doesn’t even include tire rotation.
yup, roads are terrible here especially this time of year. at 45k seems almost definite that tires would be needed. it seems wheel and tire covers only road hazard and not wear. could be worth it though if u live in the northeast.
thats so bad lol
This is a good point. You’d rather buy tires for yourself, when the factory ones are at say 4/32, rather than drive them past 2/32 and endanger yourself and others just to take advantage of any excess wear coverage.
not sure what Volvo you are leasing, but we have the Volvo XC90 with the original Pirelli tires at about 30k miles and they will need to be replaced by us before turning it in. We drive it extremely nice and mostly freeway miles so, you should factor in having to buy a new set before turn in
Hi
Question on a wear and tear charge.
Volvo is charging me for 1 tire because of a slight gouge/tear on the sidewall.
The tires had 5/32 of tread left when vehicle was returned. So the tread was enough to not be a chargeable item.
My guess was these 4 tires would have to be replaced anyways for the car to sell.
The current Carfax shows just that…all 4 tires replaced before being put back on lot by aquiring dealer. (Different from selling dealer)
So if these tires had to be replaced anyways because of the tread depth, why charge for a gouge in 1 tire? If other 3 tires were good tread wise then I would understand.
Plus I got into another Volvo.
Is it worth asking Volvo to review the charge
and not charge for 1 tire?
Thanks
Jen
It’s always worth asking.
You are obligated to either return the car with only normal wear and tear (and tires within wear guidelines, undamaged with 4/32" or more of tread remaining), or pay for any damage that goes beyond that.
Sidewall issues aren’t repairable, so the tire was garbage when you brought the car back.
If this is true they should have charged you for four tires. You got a 75% discount.
