Electrify America - Experiences and Discussion

Agreed, but if a new install I also would not install a Nema 14-50 plug with a plug in charger as you will not be able to use the full capacity of most chargers unless hard wired. Also depends on the amp rating of your intended circuit/breaker, need for a subpanel, etc. as well.

Yes, the cost of the copper in that gauge wire alone is a large part of that expense. Also keep in mind that at least in 2024 (I would assume now as well unless it changed as it was until 2033) many people can claim 30% of the charger install (parts and labor) along with 30% of the charger cost up to $1k as a tax credit on top of any local, state and utility credits, etc.

Not tax advice, but you can figure it out from there.

Even on its worst day, the worst EA station still does more good than every urea tank that was strapped to a German diesel.

My installation costs were high since I went with a hardwired connection. I wanted to maximize the full capacity of my 48 A charger. If I had gotten a Nema plug, my output would only have been 40 A. The cost of the charger was the same so I went with the hardwired one. I am glad I did.

Valley Fair and West San Carlos Safeway stations in San Jose are both offline. 17 chargers between the two of them and not even close to enough EA chargers nearby to pick up the slack.

It’s not a binary choice between cheating VW diesels and a garbage EVSE network.

The $15 billion or whatever the number was should have blanketed 90% of the population with working 300+ Kw chargers by now.

I live in the city (Washington dc) so this is a convenient option I discovered in the Georgetown neighborhood. There really isn’t any other DC option without having to go to VA or MD. Free parking for 30 min while you charge and never anyone using them. However, always 2-3 of the 6 down for some issue but I always get a charger each time without waiting. Ask nicely and they’ll extend your free 30 min parking until you’re done.

Still my favorite… $3 to get in, what a difference it makes

Does yours still have the free EA even though it’s ‘used’?

I was outside of NYC en route to Boston and it’s insane how many chargers were used by TLC and rental cars. EA over in the DMV is so much less congested!

It did. Promotion does seem to follow the vehicle w/ MB (unlike BMW). But the 2-year period from in-service ran out end of Dec/24.

Where is this one?

$2k? Damn they making over $1k in labor. Its really easy to do the install. If your handy its shouldn’t be hard. You can get the material from schwing electric

Also i think you need 4awg since its 80ft run to keep it at 60amps. Which 4awg wont fit in CP charger. Trust me i been there and its a no go.

They completed the install today. The electrician portion was 1725. The charger was 400 so I was just rounding.

I have a physical disability so unfortunately even though I know how to do the work, I can no longer physically do it :-1:

I wouldn’t trust myself to do any electrical work on my house since I am not licensed. I’d rather pay a professional, TBH.

Wow.
I know someone locally on Long Island who can do it for $600 if you have all needed parts.

I’m in MA and already got mine installed last year, but thanks for the offer

I think installation costs largely depend on how your house is set up and where your breakerbox is? Mine did cost me about $1,800 but it was a somewhat complicated job, and the guys I hired did it quickly and cleanly, so I’m not complaining.

Spend 30 minutes filling up gas for my ice Sienna & the gas container for our snow blower. Yep, filling up gas before the snowstorm in costco is really a bad time. LOL.

People are insane to wait in extended lines to put gas in their vehicles lol. Is your time worth nothing at all? What could they possibly be saving? A handful of dollars if that? Most probably aren’t close to empty… but 25 cents/gal savings over a massive (nearly empty) 30 gallon tank is a whopping $7.50.

Even at $1/gallon cheaper (which likely rarely exists, if ever), I’m not waiting in that line for damn gas. :joy:
