Electrify America - Experiences and Discussion

EA infrastructure in my area of Northern NJ is very bad. They pick good locations, but popular locations so they are always taken up.
I hope they will drop the free charging, I have a feeling that would reduce so much of the congestion.
Overall the electric charging grid is so far from being ready, especially if you’re an apartment dweller I can see why manufacturers are all offering great deals on their BEV’s.

It is much better it seems, even Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo I check those EA’s and always available. I take trips to Pismo/SLO/Morro Bay so this will work flawlessly, no doubt

Thanx, You should, I don’t think they were this “cheap” ever… My 2020 Bolt was close to this
This will also alleviate the miles on my Tesla Y as I plan to use ALL of the 10K :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: for the year

I live in an apartment, all my cars are EV, I leave one car at my local Metro Rail station as there is a FREE Clipper Creek L2 station, while that car is charging I drive the Toyota Mirai… If it is available when I pass by with 40-50 miles range I plug it in, if not I just park it there and charge overnight or whenever available -this is 3.5 miles from my home. Lately a lot of people found out about this one and tend to be occupied throughout the day,

I do have another few Clipper Creeks about a mile at the Channel Islands University, there is a $6 parking charge for the day-so if I can’t charge at Metro I will just park it here early AM and fully charged for only $6 :call_me_hand: then walk home-haven’t done this one yet but if necessary will do.

The Ioniq 5 will be used the most in the next year, so easy charging at worksite and make the most of it. Will combine with the Mirai (Free Fuel from Toyota) and put less miles on the Tesla Y

This was on a Friday night Camarillo Outlets

Friday nights are usually as light as it gets. Completely opposite on Sunday nights and Mondays. Plus there were 3 big games last night which surely must’ve helped.

Oh, I don’t really know the busy times per se, just reporting on the new adventure…will check tomorrow. Tonight was the same though, quite a few stations available-they used to have 4-5 that were down, now most are operational. I haven’t charged yet as I’m at 50% full, but will do next week and see what the speeds are on the Ioniq 5

More EVs moving to 800v architecture or quicker charging battery tech will help with this.

And I think knowledge of the after 80% drop in charge speed drop is spreading.

Yesterday, there is a slot where I charge where people take the one facing the other way because it’s closer to their port, so I can see their screen and they can see mine. I get there with 20% and they are at 40% (they have been there for at least 10-15 minutes as I was waiting in line). Of course I catch them at around 65-70% and I wonder how much longer they are going to charge. At 80% he gets out and stops his session, at the same time I stop mine. Maybe he just hit his 30 minutes… but there were 4 cars waiting so I appreciated he didn’t try to stay longer.

Exact opposite of my recent experience in Malibu. Get there with all 3 chargers in use but an E-Tron RS is at 98% and no one else waiting. Some funky dressed 55-60 y. o., dude finally shows up with daughter/girlfriend when at 99% and make themselves comfortable inside the car. I ask him if he’ll charge to 100 - he nods yes. I tell him that he’s getting just a couple of miles out of this over about 5 minutes. His response: “I don’t care!”

After he hits 100, they leisurely stroll out of the car and rearrange her shopping, which apparently couldn’t be done while milking to 100. All while hugging the now disconnected charger.

I am on charge # 4 today and it’s kind of fun? Every time I come with some papers from work thinking I’ll get some work related reading done but every time I have a pleasant conversation with some other EV owner and never get to the reading.

This indeed!! I really do enjoy talking to other EV owners at the charging stations. Since EV ownership is so new, there’s a lot of camaraderie amongst us pioneers. People seem very open to share their experiences. I also enjoy helping newbies who might be having problems with their apps, or the charger itself, or understanding various aspects of their battery and the optimal charging experience. Tons and tons of EV owners in LA are apartment dwellers so lots of us dependent on the DCFC infrastructure here.

lol well Electrify America pioneers anyway, the vast majority of EV owners just charge their Teslas without any issues and go on their way.

Like the EA station is across the parking lot from a bank of Tesla superchargers and I’ve never seen the Tesla side be more than 20% full, meanwhile there’s always a bunch of sus looking weirdos standing around their Mach-Es and Ioniqs waiting for a EA plug.

Good point! I have a Tesla and a BMW iX, and charging the Tesla “just works”. It’s no challenge! I need to play on “hard mode” to make it fun!! Haha!

Wait till the Uber bolts get used to it

Spent way too much time today trying to charge at the local electrify America station.

2/3 stations were not working and the one that did, never went above 60kw/h charging speed.

Makes me question if the “free” charging sessions are worth the hassle at all

I charged my Ioniq 5 for the first time yesterday, did a couple of tries (had to put a $10 deposit into the EA account first) Then plugged and charged for 29 minutes. Max charge was 135 KW and took it to 94% or 300 miles it showed… Mercedes, Audi, VW, Hyundai and a Ford Lightning were in the charging mix-no waiting, a charger or two available while I was there around Lunch time 12:30pm there’s 10 stations total and two are taped off Camarillo Outlets 350 KW units

Recent session.

I’m finding mid morning less crowded than early morning or late night.

People still charging passed 80-85% even now that the app has that nag banner.

When I eventually switch to a non free DCFC EV, I will still use public chargers occasionally even though charging at home is much cheaper.

Just when I said EA seemed to be working fine, I hit a snag. First, with an Audi you must have a phone with an internet connection to start the charging through the app. My phone had a screw up and I lost internet for a bit. Not Audi/EA’s fault but a bit annoying that there’s no way around it. 2nd, it made no difference because the myAudi app was borked and I couldn’t start charging anyway, so I gave up and went home. Eventually, uninstalling and reinstalling the myAudi app seems to have fixed it, but still pretty aggravating.

Carle place Long island.
