Last weekend I went to my local NYC BMW dealership to inquire about an X3. I researched the market and knew it was possible to get 11.5 percent off MSRP. I know I broke the golden rule, by going in person rather than negotiating over email. The dealer insisted that presence was power, so i made my way over there.
I test drove the car I liked, and asked for pricing. Immediately the dealer printed out a sheet of paper, and quoted me a ridiculous price. I took a picture of the paper, and excused myself to use the bathroom. In the bathroom stall, i plugged the numbers into my leasehackr calculator and saw how badly they were ripping me off. They didn’t discount anything off MSRP, marked up some accessories, it was a mess.
I went back to the salesman, and declined his numbers. He asked how much I wanted to pay a month. I replied that I was looking for 11.5 percent off MSRP, pre-incentive, and that I was not putting anything down. He chuckled and said that it’s impossible noting that they only had “a few” of the X3s available for sale and they are selling like hotcakes. He went on to say that if i didn’t lease the car today, it probably wont be here tomorrow.
I knew this was a typical dealer sales tactic, and at that moment, I decided to just out myself. I explained to him that I’ve done a lot of market research and that I know nationally these cars are going for 11.5% off MSRP. I finally told him that I am a leasehackr, and pulled out my phone to show him the calculator, so he understand the deal I was seeking. His entire demeanor changed. He knew that I would not be taken advantage of anymore. He knew I had an army of powerful brokers behind me like Quintin, HN308, and Aronchi, who I could call at any time to get an amazing price. He knew the jig was up. He knew I wasn’t a sucker.
The salesman stood up, and said he would speak with his manager. He thereafter presented me a new quote and the pricing drastically went down, but we were still too far apart. At that point, he looked me in the eye, gave me a stern handshake, and said that he would be in touch if anything changes regarding pricing. I didn’t get the car I wanted, but I left with a sense of empowerment. Do you normally share that you are a hackr? Did I make a mistake?
