DMV Renewal Notice for Car that was Turned in Months Ago

Hi all,

I turned my car in to the dealer back in January. A few days ago I received a renewal notice for my old car. I don’t recall this happening in the past. Isn’t the dealer supposed to take care of this? I hate dealing with the DMV.

Thanks in advance!

Did you fill out the release of liability that you’re supposed to do after turning in the car?

:point_up_2: what he said

Nope, and neither does the lessor.

I filled out all the forms they gave me. In previous leases, this never happened.

So the release of liability is on you to do separate from the forms they give. Some dealers will process it for you as a courtesy, but ultimately you’re supposed to do it.

I’m in socal as well and I turned in my lease (and signed a new one with the dealer) at the end of May and I just received this as well a few days ago. Signed the liability release at the dealer. Presumably something is backed up in the systems (either dealer or CA dmv) due to covid. Not sure who’s to blame.

When I sold my 2012 Challenger the dealer gave me the forms to sign for release of liability etc. I still was receiving DMV notices that my registration is due etc. I ignored it-guess when someone bought and registered the car, notices went away…

I also signed the release at the local Toyota dealership when I sold my 2017 Hellcat yesterday, and told them I was receiving notices before-they said you probably will receive them again, just ignore them as you already signed the release

Thanks all, I wonder if they did not give me the release on my old car. I don’t see it with my paperwork.

Should be easy to fight it with proof of cancelled insurance.
