Hi hackers. I bought my tiguan (year is 2021) after sending a check to VW because I learned from here that I did not have to go through the dealer. I filled the paperwork with the DMV online and they just sent me a bill for almost 1500 after the title transfer went through. Are these taxes for buying vs leasing ? Does this sound a fair or normal amount ? There is no breakdown of the bill and no one to take my call.

Did VW charge you sales tax on the buyout price? What information did you fill out online? From my experiences, you would need to take the title to the DMV or AAA to register the car. Did you ever register the title to your name?

Yes I registered the car as late as I could push it and bought it within a week after (so I hadn’t officially bought it by the time the registration was supposed to be paid.) These can’t be registration fees though. I am not sure if the buyout price includes taxes but that would explain it right ? I can find out by calling VW tomorrow and hopefully they can answer.

Registration and registering the title in your name are different things. Guessing you didn’t do the 2nd part yet? Do you have the pink slip in your name?
Jon I do not have a pink slip, just the bill of sale from VW certificate which is what I submitted to the DMV. At the time that I regĂstered the car it was still owned by VW.
Also i assume that the car is not officially mine until DMV processes the application and I send in the fee (but that fee was more than I expected). VW did send me a letter after purchasing that I may owe any additional taxes or fees not yet accessed to my account as of the date my account was closed.
Unless VW collected it, you would owe Sales Tax on at least the RV so I wouldn’t be too surprised.

Thank you. You are right because i just read that you pay the sales tax on the remaining value (however it’s still higher so hopefully I can find out tomorrow what additional taxes or fees are calculated in.)
Do you still have a copy of the form you filled out with the DMV, that should give you a good idea of what you owe
Yes I do but where is the part that I owe ? I filled it out online and all I had to show the DMV when I scanned it was pretty much that I bought it.
they should’ve given you a receipt. If not, since you are going back you can get a detailed printout

You are going to owe Sales Tax on the sale price of the vehicle plus all the typical registration fees for title and registration. DMV website should give you a pretty good idea of what those fees are,mor you could look at your original lease contract and see what you paid then.
