My allocation for a week 9 build is in PDI as I write this. After several delays its finally here, about a week or so after BMW announced the new 3 series (and subsequently 2 series) will be getting IDrive 8 in MY23.
We expected the LCI for the 3, but never expected such a dramatic refresh for the new 2 series. MY22 will effectively be the only g42 2 series with IDrive 7.
The build is fully loaded, and Im paying MSRP of 59,295 minus a 1500 incentive if I take delivery. My question for LH’ers - do we expect depreciation on MY22 to be significantly worse due to this rather quick refresh before an LCI, and am I better off walking and securing an order for MY23 instead when available? Or is there a possibility MY22 is more sought after as the only g42 with a Shifter(vs the new nub / nob thing). Maybe enough people will hate ID8 and prefer ID7 and it holds value even moreso? Wishful thinking perhaps lol
Ive researched plenty about the pros and cons of ID7 vs 8 and I think id be content with either. Its that this unexpected update makes me question if I’ll be taking a bigger hit if/when I decide to sell this thing in the next 3-5 years.
Wishful thinking for sure. With every LCI/refresh there’s a bunch of people who make a big deal about the changes (Lexus like tailights on G20, now everyone loves them. iPad slapped on top of dashboard with iDrive6, everyone got used to it. Big grills on G8x, it’s become the most successful M car to date) but eventually everyone gets onboard and starts praising the new tech.
If I were a betting man I’d say depreciation would be worse on pre LCI vs post LCI, atleast that’s been the case historically no matter how big of a stink was made on the forums. And I say this as someone who absolutely hates the new rear diffuser and lack of shifter on LCI G20.
I feel like that LCI was more significant - the refresh to the exterior is pretty noticeable.
The 2 series is not getting the LCI like the 3 series, just the update to IDrive 8 (new infotainment, large curved screen, buttonless, no stick). Otherwise the vehicle is identical in appearance.
2 series probably won’t get ID8 until LCI, so a few years at least.
I’d go with ID7. They took away almost all the buttons (including 1-6 shortcuts, heated seats, climate) with ID 8 because 'voice recognition can do everything '.
ID7 looks better but resale will be better on ID8. I wouldn’t expect a significant difference. Maybe order a second one with ID8 and trade your car if the market stays hot? If you live in a state with tax credit you might almost end up even.
