Deal Check: Kia EV9 Land in AZ

, ,

Looking for some quick help with an offer from local Kia dealer.

I pulled the MF/RV/incentives numbers from the Edmunds forum and got 0.00092 MF, 50% RV, $14,000 lease cash on an EV9 Land at 36mo./15K

The dealer said they would drop their markup on the MF and reduce our monthly payment to $865/mo.

The numbers they gave me seem to align with the MF/RV/incentives numbers I got from the Edmunds forum but the monthly lease payment seems higher than what a lot of other people here have gotten on EV9s (and many are higher trim GTs). Is this because we’re in AZ and these cheaper deals are in other states? I’ve seen leases in the $500s and $600s per month posted here but many in OH, NJ, CO, etc. I could ask them to knock off the $500 for the trim and $200 for the tile, but I don’t know how to get them to go lower. I asked about a refundable security deposit to lower my MF and they said they’ve never heard of that in 24 years of doing business.

Would love thoughts on the deal. Thanks!

(We plan on putting $0 down)

The short answer is yes, but its not a fair comparison to look at states like CO and NJ that have their own unique larger rebates on EVs

There aren’t refundable security deposits on Kias

The itemized dealer discount is $3,139, but they’re clawing back more than half of that ($1,697) via worthless add-ons (you caught two of them, but “lease care” for $999 is also garbage).

So this offer is

(3,139 - 1,697) / 73,860 = 1.9% dealer discount,

which is almost certainly really light for this vehicle.

If you look at other more compelling deals for this vehicle/trim, even in other states, what is the effective dealer discount on those?

Use that to work up a target price in the LH calculator (if you need help, post a link to your best attempt), and then pivot to making offers.

You aren’t going to get anywhere meaningful by asking for quotes and then trying to saw away at individual components one at a time.

[Also, and I’m not following this model at all, is 36 months the most favorable term on this vehicle?]

Thanks. Super helpful. 24 months seems to be the most favorable term on the EV9. Apparently, Kia leased lots of EV9s for 36 and 48 months and they want to avoid getting them all back at the same time. I got a quote for 24 months too but it’s only marginally better than this 36 months quote and 36 months is better for us so I’m willing to take the hit for the longer term.

I’ll try using the tools but curious why I can’t just go back to these guys and ask them to remove all of the BS add-ons that kill the discount.

The $1,700 in useless garbage doesn’t residualize, so while the 24 month program (MF/RV/incentive combo) may be better, you’re eating 100% of the cost of this crap over 24 months instead of 36, dramatically diminishing (and possibly eliminating) the appeal of the better/shorter program.

Is 3,139 / 73,860 = 4.2%

a compelling dealer discount / target on this car?

I suspect no, but I honestly don’t know, which is why I suggested this

Thanks. I gotcha. Really appreciate the help. Will try to the tool and come back if any questions.

So I popped everything into Rate Findr and came back with the offers in the area (HERE in case you’re curious)

I texted the dealer asking him to remove the charges for “Lease Care,” “Tile,” and “Grand Prix Tint” and to add in the additional incentives I found which reduce the monthly payment to $721.

Dealer says they “can’t remove tint and tile.” Any idea why they can’t do this? Should I push back?

(Sorry, not sure if this is something you or anyone here would be able to help with)

The reason I said this

Is because you’ve already been sized up as uninformed, so they believe they can get you to pay this. It’s really hard to turn a deal like this around at this point.

If they won’t remove these, you just have to get a higher dealer discount of an equal amount (+ $499 + 199), compared the discount you would have accepted without this garbage tacked on.

Take a step back and make your best and final offer, and then move on if you get a no.

Thanks. This is my first time negotiating a lease like this (as I’m sure you can tell). I think I’m confused because Rate Findr is giving me $721/mo., assuming I’m putting the numbers in correctly and they’re offering $804/mo. now, which is pretty close, so I’m not sure what I could have done differently here aside from sending them my $721 number first before they shared their numbers.

I asked them to apply the incentives I found and gave them the final monthly payment amount:

I see a number of other discount offers like the following:

Kia US KFA Special Subvented Lease for high credit lesees

$14K in lease cash+$750 in bonus cash (I think this was already applied)

Select VIN Sticker Lease bonus cash

I also see “Lease Care” “Tile” and “Grand Prix Tint” applied to the quote which I’d like to remove.

Can we rework the quote with those additional incentives added and those three items removed?

I’m getting $721 per month with those changes

Response from dealer:

Rebates are as follows…
14000 lease cash
600 vin select
750 land bonus cash
I removed the lease care add
Rate is not marked up.
This is the best I can do. Let me know if we can move forward on this

@trism I took your advice and told them $721/mo. is where I’m ending up in my calculations and we’re ready to sign on that today. If they can’t get there, we’ll move on.

I’m curious what we could have done differently, though. They matched the MF and RV I found on Edmunds and through Rate Findr, they gave us almost all of those incentives listed on Rate Findr for which we qualify and if I can get them down to $721/mo., that matches the Rate Findr lease payment. What would you have done?

Thanks for all of your help.

It’s unclear what your effective (after add-ons) discount is at present. For a Land trim, I would be looking for at least 7% off, or around $5000. The payment is lower on 24-month term because the incentives are actually higher. Check out this marketplace deal from @GCauto as a framework. There are some very aggressive Kia dealers in AZ but whomever you are working with is not one of them.

Hello, any update?
I’m looking for something similar and the dealership you talked to sounds like one of 4 I’ve tried before. Is this one Royal Kia?

Hi @EeVe, yes, it was Royal Kia.

I ended up getting them down to $765/mo., no money down. I called Jim Click Kia and a couple dealerships in Phoenix before going back to Royal Kia. All of the other dealerships are currently out of EV9s. Royal Kia had 3 left. None of them know when they’re going to get more in, what trim level, etc. I could have gone out of state, but I just don’t have time to search for out of state deals and I wanted the ease of closing the deal with a local dealership.

For what it’s worth, the guys at Royal Kia were generally really nice, not pushy at all, and pretty helpful. I probably paid a bit more than I should have but I got them down from an initial quote of around $1,000/mo. (then, a second quote of $909/mo.) to $765/mo. Each time I sent them my calculations, they went through them with me and tried to bridge the gap in price between my calculations and their quote. We ended with a difference of about $40 per month between us, which I was fine with.

Hope that helps! Good luck. Let me know if any other questions. Happy to share whatever is helpful!

I think you leased the white one we had ours eyes on

No, that white one was gone when we leased ours. We also wanted it haha. We got a black one (Pantera Metal color) with two-tone interior trim. There are so few left in the state, we just took what we could get!
