BMW issued a bulletin which says that if a customer exercised the purchase option on a BMW lease between January 1, 2020 and June 30, 2025, there is an extra incentive. It varies by vehicle, but on an X5, it is an extra $1,500, for instance. So, if you had a BMW lease which ended August 15, 2023, and you bought it out rather than grounding the lease, you get an extra incentive. It is not combinable with loyalty, but it’s more than loyalty on each car.
What do you mean by my discount? I got a worksheet from dealership that mentions $2000 factory incentive Discount on top of the 10% i got in a separate line item.
Only matters at the margin but I think it’s good noting that if you buy a vehicle in Maryland and register it in Virginia you likely don’t have lemon law protection. MD lemon law requires the vehicle to be registered in MD and VA lemon law requires the vehicle to be purchased in VA.
Yes, it’s been very confusing, and a lot of dealerships don’t realize that the other $1,000 comes from them, so then they have backed off on discounts.
If you’re worried about lemon law issues, I have a dealership in VA.
Yes, there was a piece of the guidance where it says at the bottom that it must be listed out on the contract as $2,000, but $1,000 is dealership contribution, or they won’t get reimbursed by BMWFS. A lot of dealerships didn’t realize that and had to recontract people.
Thank you for pointing this out, I honestly had no idea about the lemon law limitations until you mentioned it.
I did some research, and it looks like the only real protection for someone in my situation is the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. It does offer some recourse if there’s a serious defect that can’t be fixed under warranty, but it sounds like pursuing it can be a bit of a process compared to state lemon laws.
It’s pretty strange (and frustrating) that you pay all these hefty taxes to Virginia, but if you buy a car out of state, you lose out on important consumer protections right when you might need them most.
Interesting. Did Nissan cooperate? It seems to me based on the law if Nissan were to fight you, you would have no recourse in court. But interested to hear if you had a different experience.
