Crystal Ball: EV Leasing This Summer

With my 4xe lease expiring in June, I’m looking at the LYRIQ next. How do you think the current oil market uncertainty will impact GM’s EV strategy? Could it lessen their urgency to move inventory through incentives/discounts? Trying to gauge the best time to sign.

I think GM will have their hands full trying to manage all of the EV’s coming OFF lease this year, its estimated that something like 300,000 are going to be hitting the market over the course of 2026. This downward pressure on values is going to affect estimated residuals hard. It will be a great time to commit and buy a used EV, not sure about leasing a new one.

If you think EV depreciation is bad now, just wait until those aforementioned 300K leases show up on dealer lots. You have to have a hole in your head to buy one, or just not care about money.

Nope, that will be a good time to pick up used ev.

Exactly - probably a mistake to buy one right now, but a good idea to watch the market and buy when it makes sense for you.

For a second I thought @vhoolo was back!

Several people here (me included) are glad we got one with Feb programs.

OTOH

May starts next week and your current car goes back in June.

If you’re optimizing value (lower trim, one-pay, considering a loaner) and an effective shopper, the monthly cost of jumping early should be ~$400 and perhaps less.

If you’re just quote shopping, you can overpay in any month of the year, regardless of what the market’s doing. In that case I’d wait.

As our Equinox EV lease is coming up, I think we’re going to move forward with buying (not leasing) a Rivian R2 Launch Edition, but we’re ready to commit and keep a vehicle long term. Before going electric in 2015 I owned a 2003 BMW 330i ZHP for a hair short of 10 years.
For my better half, Nissan is repurchasing our Leaf, which we own outright; we’re going to jump into a lease-swap Equinox EV for the next 14 months and then see how the used EV market looks.
So we’re done with leasing but really we’re not, so to speak. And who knows, if the lease option on the R2 is palatable, we might go that route. Either way, still driving electric, they’re just more fun to drive.

You owned a true BMW and think EVs are more fun to drive?

I have one. I’ve driven a bunch. None have come close to being as fun as a 6 speed RWD car.

But each to their own.

I keep my 2002 e46 330i for 14 years, sometimes I still want to buy another e46 M3 back

I got Mini SE to replace my e46. Different kind of fun but it’s fun to drive nonetheless and this one is easier to park in the city.

We’re considering a Mini SE after we are done with this Equinox EV lease take-over, we have two friends with them one that proclaims it’s the funnest car he has ever had. It’s a third car for them, with his primary vehicle being a quad motor 2026 Rivian R1S. So he thinks his Mini SE is more fun than his 1000hp Rivian.

I often miss my ZHP, but I think I miss just being young, I associate that car with my late 20’s, early 30’s, so my recollection is skewed. I don’t miss changing OFHG’s or brittle coolant components.

hilarious to think about what’s going to happen to the car market 3 months from now, when it’s impossible to figure out what’s going to happen tomorrow, with the way this country has been.
