Costco certificate - how to get it unlocked from car?

Costco will only issue two certificates (or authorization codes) per account for their auto program.

I was working a deal with two different dealers. They each requested my costco number when writing up quotes, thus generating 2/2 certificates. Neither car was purchased.

Now on a third unit, trying to generate the certificate, dealer is getting an error that the authorization codes have already been used. Essentially, my 2 certificates got locked to those other cars.

Spent an hour on the phone with Costco Auto, and they claim there is nothing they can do to issue another certificate once two are created, that the two they issued should still work (they don’t), and that they are powerless on their end to help.

Anyone dealt with this? How can the certificate get unlocked from the cars I am not going to transact on?

I don’t have the answer to this but good PSA - don’t tell the dealer that you are doing Costco until you are ready to sign the deal. Just use that amount as down in the calculations.

Quick question - was it polestar or Chevy?

I think the PSA is to just have the dealer apply the assumed costco discount without having the certificate until the deal is fully ready to
Go. Present the certificate when the deal is done, with both you and the dealer knowing the Costco discount in the deal is only valid in the deal if you provide a proper certificate.

Yea, to add to that though, I did not provide any certificate to the dealer, only my costco member number.

You would think.

Sends out quote:

799/mo 36mos 10k/yr 1345 due at signing,

requires costco loyalty and registration to either suffolk or nassau county, transfer plates additional.

3 minutes later, “uhhhh I said I had costco but I don’t can you work with me to keep the same deal?”

Happened 2x this month already

This is a case of lying though and customer absolutely does not deserve the same deal.

It was a referral. A father referred his son to get a deal from me.

I forwarded the ENTIRE email thread to his father.

Terrible and not cool. Did it go anywhere w revised pricing or was it just a waste of your time?

His father called and apologized for his son’s behavior. Said he will call me back with a resolution lol

@Benedetto has a nasty story “Costco rebate that wasn’t” :smirk:

Huh, their policy is pretty confusingly - in the Volvo certificate it does say “only 2 promotional codes per membership”, but I would have understood this to mean one member can only buy 2 cars under the program. Apparently it actually means literally 2 codes, so if you print a code for Volvo and a code for Cadillac, like I did, then you’re stuck with those 2 and SOL if you change your mind and want to get a Polestar instead, even if you don’t use the other 2 codes.

Also the Cadillac certificate doesn’t have the disclaimer on it, if I didn’t also have the Volvo cert I wouldn’t have known about it.

Correct, had NO idea there was a limit on codes, as it said it no where. Only saw it listed on volvo when googling. Costco says they have zero way to undo codes or give me a new one. Completely ridiculous system. If code has not been used to complete a transaction, it should be valid to move anywhere

Lol why? Trust should work both ways! Especially with the research the crew here has in hand!

The dealer has to cancel the certificate- there are some bad actors that would spitefully not cancel- but they’re few and far between us imagine.

Can you give me the quick steps to cancel? Dealer honestly had no clue how to do so, because I was trying to complete deal at same dealership just a different VIN and it wouldn’t work.

Oh yea. I create the code for client convenience- but if a sales team that’s “butthurt” loses the deal- they likely would just redeem the code and not think twice to cancel- GM Goodwill line may help- give them a call- they’re pretty good- if you know the vin they may have redeemed on, they may be able to assist quicker.

They can do it from Gmglobal>Vehicle Purchase Program>Cancel Approval>search by

Search by- options are - approval code, authorization number, or VIN

Try generating the code from a second account, i.e. your wife’s, for example. Two members have two separate accounts under the same membership. No idea if that works, but worth a try.

I signed up to a Costco membership after April 30th deadline for this deal. Is there any way to get the $2,000 Costco deal from the dealer or Polestar directly?
