The Colorado registration fees are paid at the BMV not through the dealer so when you lease in CO the gov fees are extremely low on the lease docs. But, yes, remember you’ll have hundreds and maybe thousands due when you go to register the car for the first year.
Also, I’m not sure what’s going on with the rebates here. I believe Colorado gives you a $5,000 rebate, but the car has to be under $80,000. The rebates on an i5 are $7,500 for leases and $1,500 for loyalty, which would be $14,000 with the CO rebate, but this car wouldn’t qualify. There is another $600 for assigning the credit to a dealership or financing entity, too, but it still doesn’t add up, unless this is $7,500 + $5,000 + $600 + $1,000 EV conquest.
Should actually work out to be $14,350 as the dealership takes $250 of the $5,600 allotted if you assign the credit at the POS. However, I was going to congratulate OP on maxing the fine print of the CO tax credit which specifically excludes any destination and handling charges from the $80,000 MSRP calculation. So, for the sake of the credit, this i5 would have an MSRP of $80,395 - $1,175 (or whatever their destination/delivery charge is) to get under the $80,000 limit.
Bingo. And the tax credit shrinks again after the first of the year, so I have to take delivery by 12/31/24. Now if I can just find a way to pry another $4k in discounts from the dealer.
The registration will most likely be ~$1,500. Brutal.
You may need to look out of state for the best discounts. My experience has been that the Colorado dealers just don’t come close to dealers in the rest of the country in part because they’re moving units to normal people thanks to the tax credit. Maybe check Kansas City?
Registration does drop significantly in year 2. I wish there was more discussion of registration and insurance as the crazy MSRPs here make those numbers wild.
