CarPlay and Waze and Google Maps...oh my!

For all you CarPlay lovers who are bent you can’t use Waze…be patient…

Great news! I was considering going back to Android so that I could use Waze (still am considering that iOS has awful keyboards and the lack of haptic feedback when typing is almost a deal breaker)

Hey. I have an Android but not a smart car yet so I know very little about it.

But when I last looked into you could not use Waze on on only GMaps. Has this changed?

Apple CarPlay is on my wish list for my next car. Had a bunch of rental cars with it, it’s very convenient, not just for maps but for playing podcasts, etc. I never really had an issue with the apple maps, sure beats the horrible BMW navigation but the ability to use waze is a great feature. Can’t wait.

Anything beats in-car navigation, even Apple maps. Apple maps has gotten much better, but most people would still prefer to use Waze or Google Maps. FYI, Google owns Waze.

They’re predicting that this will roll out in September, right before the new iPhone release.

See, I like the BMW nav/iDrive in comparison to CarPlay. CarPlay is OK, but I could live without it too. My 3er is my first car with CarPlay.

the nav in my 2016 BMW is always wrong with traffic, always wrong with ETA and most of the time takes me the wrong way to my destination. And i’ve tested it extensively. Even entering your address via voice is off 80% of the time. It’s really bad, at least on my car.

Exactly the same experience for me. I actually wanted to rule out BMW as my future car because of the lack of Android Auto integration. Now I can at least consider another BMW and just get a used iPhone to get Waze on the car’s screen.

You mean a second phone (in addition to your Android device)? And a second data plan?

Sounds like a lot of overkill just to support a brand that doesn’t have AA and charges $300 for CarPlay (free in every other OEM adaptation).

Personally I don’t use either much so it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker for me. But I believe in consumers voting with their wallets otherwise they’ll never hear you.

I think there was an update between 16 and 17 on iDrive. I have a 17.

Yea, 2017 diff story.

I just wished there was more support for wireless carplay. I hate having to take the phone out of my pocket and plug it in. I’m super lazy.

Yeah that seems beyond antiquated to me. iOS devices have been able to wirelessly mirror screens for ages.

My MINI does CarPlay via Bluetooth on my 2018. Was one of the things which sold me on my car. I really like Idrive in the MINI over Apple maps, but I use both interchangeably. Getting directions via Siri is less cumbersome than the voice activation on the MINI Idrive system, although I’m shocked that system can reliably understand me with the windows all down on the Freeway.

I think the biggest challenge is liability when it comes to true mirroring in-car. I made a point of getting cars with Android Auto in them for using the Uber driver app, and so far they’ve done nothing to enable it, which means 90% of the time in the car I’m still stuck using a mount and my phone. I think the car/phone manufacturers and Google/Apple all know full well that the idiots walking and driving among us won’t be able to resist playing Candy Crush or watching Despacito for the millionth time while driving, and they’ll get sued into oblivion after the fact if they ever really let this kind of stuff work the way it could (or should).

Pssshhh apple users lol. Been enjoying it for a whole 3 months on my wifes encore. Android play rocks !

Pssshhh. Apple Maps takes me through the scenic part of town, and sometimes I have to jump the median to make the left turn.

Yes, second phone. I agree with you that, as a consumer, I should vote with my wallet, but if, when the time to replace my current BMW comes in 18 months, BMW will have an edge from price and performance perspective, I think it will be smarter for me to just factor-in the cost of a used iPhone, 1GB monthly data plan and the monthly Car Play subscription that BMW is planning on imposing than to choose a different brand I don’t like as much or that is substantially more expensive for that reason alone.

See Autonomous Driving vehicle news for proof of that.

Contrary to some, I’ve had excellent experiences with iDrive on my 330e. I had been using Android auto in my previous car, and I was anticipating a big step down when going to the BMW nav. However, I was pleasantly surprised, and outside of a couple rare cases, the combination of voice dictation and handwriting recognition has gotten the job done quite well.
